    Turbo turned resto

So a little while ago well actually Easter (holy crap where’s the year gone) I parked my county in the shed to properly once and for all fix the dodgy electrics and turbo the old girl. That has now turned into a rolling resto 🤪😂as these things do.
    the Fun stuff
Got a new Holset hx 30 and Isuzu manifold
Alloy intercooler piping and 600x 300 intercooler to be mounted out front.
    The bad
The electrics where really bad I’m surprised she hadn’t fully burnt to the ground it had tried on at least 5 different occasions. And had been badly converted to blade fuses
All front electrics have been pulled out and ditched. And I was lucky enough to score a complete really good condition 200 tdi 110 loom and fuse box unmolested and uncut which we will wired in to work with the Isuzu soon. I just need to track down a defender dash now.
So now it’s stripped down some fool had the great idea to paint her now so started tapping dents and rubbing down the body. Going with a variation on the stock county with Gmh formula blue white roof and stock 1985 county decals. And will be replacing all seals body deadening and insulating the whole landy. There’s heaps more I’m sure I’ve missed and I’ll post photos as I’m going.
    Cheers

Yeah It’s was definitely mixed emotions starting to sort out the electrics but I’m happy now it’s gonna be done right.
Dunno about the snorkel was on it when I bought the county.

Discomat - I've just fitted a HX30 to mine. Might put some info in separate thread but until then here's a quick brain dump in case its useful.
Have you already got the flanges and clamps for the compressor and exhaust? If so I'd be interested to know where you sourced them from as I had to hunt a round a bit locally, and fab'd my own flanges.
Compressor was a standard 2" v-band, and the turbine exhaust is 3" outer diameter on the flange - not 3" pipe size. I got a proper clamp to suit from a turbo place.

I made a 20mm spacer to go between turbo and manifold - allowed me to clock the compressor housing enough to match my original "behind the engine" crossover pipes (no intercooler). Without the spacer I couldn't clock the compressor outlet to vertically down as the housing hit the manifold. The spacer also gave me a good place to tap and drill for the EGT thermocouple.

Watch out for the damn exhaust gaskets as they aren't as symmetrical as they appear.
Mine (aftermarket full VRS kit with head gasket etc) had TOP stamped on the gaskets. When fitted with that at the top the gaskets didn't match up properly. I had to mount them upside down with the TOP at the bottom. Unfortunately the problem wasn't obvious until I started it up and could hear the exhaust leak. PITA changing the gaskets when the turbo is fully installed and plumbed!!

Oil inlet banjo and bolt I got from my local Enzed store. Thread is 12x1.5 from memory (but possibly could be 1.75 pitch).

    Hi Steve
Thanks for the info. I managed to find a second hand compressor elbow with clamp on Ebay from China.
As for the Exhaust side i haven't had much luck so far although a local truck bits dealer had told me they can source the Cummins/HX30 exhaust clamp? See how they go.
I will be running a front mount I/C so it looks like shouldn't need a spacer between the manifold and turbo. Although i haven't done much on the turbo side of things as I have been focussed on getting the electrics sorted but and the dodgy bits tidied up first.
On a different note I have sorted out my DIY spray booth today, a 6m x 3m party Marquee and have a positive pressure full face mask to get the county looking back to her former glory. so far I have the bonnet and one wing/ front guard repaired, just waiting for a primer fill now.
Im removing the roof and rear tub section to get the old body mold/cappings re galed and replace all seals. If anyone got any ideas on better ways to weather seal and do this process that would be very much appreciated.
    cheers

    Turbo turned resto

On the electrics side of things I highly recommend some sort of battery disconnect switch.
I put mine in the earth lead from the batteries as it's common to both batteries, and I mounted it on the front of the passengers side seat box.
At a push I can reach it from the drivers seat while mobile if I have to. It's just one of the Narva style ones with the removable red plastic key.
Apart from the emergency disconnect aspect it's a great way to remove all power during maintenance (ever shorted a spanned on the starter lug by accident!!) as well as making sure nothing is draining the battery if the vehicle sits around a bit.

PS. IMO stick with the same diameter as the turbo exhaust outlet for the dump pipe. Mine is 3" as I was modding an existing turbo install, but 2.5 (or 2.75) will allow tighter bends and make it easier to route.
Buy a tube "donut" if you're going to make your own pipe. Much tighter than U-bends.
