Tip in the center.
How far in do you stick the probe in the exhaust stream?
With my Auber in the 120 build I only have it in the stream about 13mm.
With the VDO I bought for the FC I am working on , the instructions are a bit vague but it looks as if it goes nearly right across to the other side.
I am a bit wary of that as it looks a bit fragile.
Found this which made me think my first is not in far enough but I can still get 700 C on it.

Does this mean my EGT is really higher and I should put it in further?
What have others done? This is pre-turbo.

Tip in the center.
Won't really matter how deep Keith, as long as it is in the pipe.

depending on the probe (and its conductivity to the exhaust manifold) you only need to go about 1/8-1/4 of the way into the stream.
if you get too close to the pipe it will pick up some residual heat from the metal work, its easy to spot when this happens you'll get a normal initial rise a quickish drop but then it will hold for a little while before dropping down slowly.
IF you're too far towards the outside you'll get a slow rise as the probe bleeds heat to the pipework.
its not super critical.

I have real doubts that would be true. I can believe there might be a few degrees difference between the edge and the centre of the airflow but I wouldn't expect much variance under load. I notice they didn't actually say what the temperature reading were after moving the probe deeper.

yes,
the probe I have setup for tdi300 has a 90 degree bend which lives outside the sealing compression coupling.
From the face of the thread of the compression coupling that sits on the manifold flange the probe tip is inserted ~40mm.
Hopefully I can still ASCII ART....
