    How’s the R380 holding up?

    Hi guys,

For those with R380 gearboxes behind the 4BD1, how are they holding up?

    Cheers Bob

    R380 Behind a 4BD1

I have a Defender 110 with a factory Turbo 4BD1T conversion. Conversion was done over 12 1/2 years ago. The vehicle has now travelled over 340,000ks since, and has a late suffix R380 fitted. The present box has covered about 280,000ks since overhaul. Thus far numerous trips in central Australia, (Including 6x across the Simpson including Madigan Line, 2 big cross country trips, E-W trip with a trailer, 3 solo vehicle crossings), High country from southern NSW north, towing, etc etc. The nay sayers predicted the demise of the gearbox in all the types of travel that I have undertaken. The ratios work exceptionally well behind the Isuzu (1.2:1 LT230 TC), and there have been no causes for concern.

Do you use 5th gear a lot, or is this not necessary with your setup?

Yes - I use 5th gear all the time, but am careful not to overload 5th e.g. I generally change down on hills at about 2000rpm or a bit above 90kmh, and if towing very heave trailers generally tow in fourth on the flat and up hill, and use fifth downhill. As mentioned before the R380 as stood up very well to the 4BD1T over the last 330000ks.

Thanks for that. I have one more question: assuming, you have a single mass flywheel, how rattly do you find the gearbox? I'm asking because I considered a smf for my Td5, but was talked out of it by my mechanic. From my experience with a 4.2l Patrol, it was just a matter of adjusting the idle rpm accordingly and I had no issues after that.

    R380 5th Gear

My engine is fitted with the factory 4BD1T single mass flywheel. I have a Land Rover 6x6 pressure plate with a Pajero fitment "soft centre" clutch plate fitted. The Pajero fitment plate was used because the splines are the same as the R380 input shaft. The clutch plate boss was modified to clear the spigot bearing.

The clutch set up has been in the vehicle for over 330000ks an is still performing well
