    Comments of conversion.

Engine and turbo kit: Conversion straight forward and all supplied items fitted up no issues.

r380 gear box running disco transfer. Engine pulls fine with this gearbox. I find that the engine does not appear to labour, 100kph engine is cruising along and plenty to give if i was to put boot into it.

5th gear: engine has plenty of torque and i can see how people could forget to change down on hills. Small incline which had the 300tdi laboring. the 4bd1 cruises up effortlessly.

I have adjusted fueling as per supplied guide with Turbo Kit . I have no smoke on acceleration or going up the gears. I could wind it out more but will leave well enough alone.

Engine temp: Modified v8 radiator. Sits on about 85 on VDO gauge. Head temp taken from the back of the head reads 70=75.

All things taken into account more then happy. I will be heading up the cape towing a camper trailer at the end of the month so will provide feed back after trip.

If you want to know who I bought the conversion kit off pm me for details.

Last but not least Spanner rating: if you can read a guide and have a mate handy with a welder I rate it about 3 out of 5 spanners to do. Also plenty of advise of forums. Baz

    Cape trip report

Well back from my trip towing camp trailer and sundries gestimation about 2 tons all up. Happy to report other then a small fuel supply issue which i will get to no issues. Temperature sat on 83c head temp 73. It varied going up some steep ranges but happy to report nothing over 88 with head temp showing max of 80. Dropped back to normal within a minutes of cresting hill. Towing with the r380 with discovery transfer, seamless. 4th gear 95 kph to 100. Occasional run in 5th crept up over 110 kph without effort but i eased up back to 100kph. Fuel economy worked out about 12.5 per 100. Happy with that. Fuel Issue : After sitting for a night it would start and drive about 30 klm and then starve for fuel and stop. It took a bit to work out but it was a bit of me and the original 300 tdi pick up. I run a Brown and Davis long range tank and prior to the trip (a few days) the pickup/sender started to weep. I drained the tank and pulled it out and resealed with fuel safe gasket/silicon NOT. Anyway only way it would bleed up after the stop was to blow back through the fuel lines and it would run fine for the rest of the day. Not a big issue just a pain in the arse. Once home i dropped tank and gave it a good clean out. A few balls of silicone. Anyway i was buggered if i could see any real issue. My mate who was over pointed out that when looking through the pickup pipe there appeared to be a small tag of plastic where the metal pipe was pushed into the black plastic through pipe. It had been there since manufacture . My theory was that the 4bd1 has a different flow rate and when started after the fuel settled it picked up a silicone ball and acted as a flapper valve. Anyway cleaned out the pipe with some effort and a small round file and now no issue. You live and learn. Anyway all good now. Would i do the conversion again yes. Baz
