Clutch / gearbox brake dragging noise

I recently purchased a Land Rover Perentie GS 4x4 with Isuzu 4bd1 and LT95.
I have noticed a strange brake dragging kind of noise coming from the bell housing/ gearbox,
the noise gets quiter when the clutch is depressed but does not disappear, and comes back when the clutch is engaged.
The noise doesn’t sound like a bad bearing in the gearbox, and it is the opposite to what you would expect from the clutch release bearing.
Any experience or help would be much appreciated in diagnosing the noise.
    Thanks

Sounds like a big rattling noise at idle? Disappears when clutch depressed? Disappears when revved up in neutral?
If this is what's happening, it's a normal gearbox noise, caused by the engine "power pulses" at idle. These vehicles spent hours at idle when in service, and the noise is the input gear rattling against the cluster gear causing a tiny bit of wear. It's classic diesel gearbox rattle. They overcome this rattle in more modern diesel powered vehicles, by fitting a dual mass dampened flywheel. It dampens the power pulses at idle common with most, if not all, diesel engines. It's an annoying noise, but its normal with older design gearboxes. Don't forget, this LT95 gearbox has been around, unchanged, since the early 60's.
    Cheers.

Not quite - this gearbox was designed for the Rangerover and for the 101. The first Rangerover prototype did not appear until 1967 and first production 1970. 101 production started in 1972.

With this in mind, early sixties is a bit of a stretch.
