    Noisy Lt85

Just wondering how bad the noise gets in an lt85 before thy fail? At idle my County rattles a fair bit and is noticeably louder than my son’s County which has a fairly fresh lt95. Clutch in and the rattles go away. With the transfer case in neutral and at idle the box rattles in all gears. Just off idle the box is fairly quiet in all gears except for 4th. 4th still rattles a little at mid revs. On the road I’m not noticing the noise but I think that’s because the whole car is so noisy anyway.

Sooo, I’m suspecting the input shaft bearing and am wondering if the noise is normal or signs imminent failure?

I’ve got a spare under the bench but don’t want to crack it out prematurely.

Anybody ? Any opinions greatly appreciated....I'm listening to all the rattles now and slowly driving myself insane trying to guess what they are.

Not familiar with the gearbox so I can't comment, but an idea of kilometers on the unit might trigger comment from those who know how many they had on before failure.

Fair point. Not sure about the exact km's (speedo dead when I bought the car, but I'm guessing around the 450k mark from the history the previous owner gave me. Its certainly not fresh.

I can only share that I've done one rebuild on my lt85 to date and the action got loose by comparison and there were metal on metal 'bangin' sounds from time to time that led me to the conclusion it was time to do so. Worked with Ashcroft transmissions as the original overdrive on the LT85 ring has a pin which originally was made of metal too soft for the job while in overdrive and they provide a hardened metal part for the replacement pin that seems to have greatly improved wear. Local to this forum Bearman has been of great knowledge and assistance and has likely forgotten more about the lt95 and lt85 than I'll ever know.
