    Adjusting the idle

When idling I've noticed the 4bd1 has less vibration (i.e. morrors dont shake) if the revs are a little higher.

probably a basic question - how do you adjust the idle on the 4bd1. Is it by adjusting the nuts at the engine end of the accelorator cable or do you do something at the pedal end?

Or is there some other problem.

    thanks

no they vibrate like mad at the nominated idle speed.

to run up the idle theres an external Idle adjust screw on the top of the pump where the accelerator linkage is

i just spent an hour or so yesterday pulling all the air cleaner out , putting in foam to stop the rattle I get now and then when I stop at lights...it annoyed the ***t out of me for a good couple of weeks...did the idle up a bit..no difference...rattle still there....then I thought...put my hand on the bonnet....for ****s sake...it's the bloody bonnet rattling...adjust rubber in hinges...gone.

I spent the first few years I had the County trying to stop the rattle in the bonnet hinges. Turned out it was actually the mirror.

Found an interesting one today while finishing up fitting a new steering box. I took the bonnet folding strut off to put a bend in it so it does not touch the PS reservoir lid. The pin where it attaches to the bonnet is secured by a "C" clip. Vibration has resulting in this clip deepening the groove it fits in until it has nearly cut the end off the pin. I repalced it with one with a hole in it and installed an "R" clip.

Also, still on the effects of vibration, while doing the job I found the air cleaner bracket was broken - AGAIN - and welded it up. Anyone else had this problem?

thanks Dave I will give this a go on the weekend hopefully.

And Paul, the bonnet plastic hinge inserts are new so has been ok. I also used a defender radiator support panel with a defender bonnet catch so that may have helped.

John, yes the angle bracket on my previous 110 cracked after a trip to Cape York. My current 110 bracket mount is only fixed by 3 instead of 4 bolts as one had had snapped off inside the block. I couldn't get it out. I have an intermitent vibration behind the firewall. I suspect this is the cause. Alternatively, it could be a 1000 other items getting the 4bd1 vibe treatment.

I've had thoughts of moving the aircleaner to in front of the heater box and using that space for a 2nd battery

Hopefully your cracked bracket is the 3rd of threes after the fall and old faithful going?

    1. My aircleaner support bracket only has two dirty great screws - about 16 or 18mm through the bell housing into the block. Sounds as if yours is a different setup, perhaps civilian vs military?

    2. Can't do that with mine - that space is occupied by the airconditioning compressor and hoses.

    3. The broken bracket was trivial compared to the others - wasn't even the bracket itself, but rather the hoop that goes round the air cleaner. Thanks for the thought, anyway.

Tomorrow is going to be a bit interesting - I have to take my tandem trailer in to town to get a pink slip - my next door neighbour heard I was taking it in empty, so he's got me taking about a tonne and a half of scrap metal in.

G'day All, My County (1 of the press release vehicles way back then) had all the extra's fitted, so when I start up cold, with engine running I adjust the hand throttle that takes care of the engine vibrating the Land Rover to pieces, about 3 minutes into the drive release Hand throttle and it has smoothed out.
I do know of other vehicles that have had broken A/cleaner mounts, but mine have not broken as yet, cheers Dennis
PS and yes my bonnet rattles, I fix that problem on long trips with a bonnet mounted spare

John I have a pair of galled strap brackets you can have if you want.

Alternatively, they are a Donaldson part you can buy through truck places.
