    4BD1 water pump leak

    Hi All,

My 4BD1 has started leaking coolant and I'm almost certain it is coming from the water pump. I can't tell exactly where it is coming from, but was wondering whether this is a common issue and whether people normally just replace the pump.

Also, is it a particularly difficult job? I've just had surgery on a wrist and I'm not supposed to use tools for about 6 weeks. I can drive (just) but that's about it.

    Cheers,
    Dave,

Mine started leaking a year ago from around the bottom of the casting. I bought a new one( turned out to be the wrong one ) and on pulling the pump off ( easy job ) found the mating surface is only about 5mm wide around the inlet port. This section had rusted slightly and the gasket had crapped out.

Because the bearing and vanes where fine, and cos the replacement pump was wrong, I cleaned it up and put the pump back on with "instant gasket" and no leaks since

    Hope this helps,

    Bruce.

Thanks Bruce. I had a closer look at mine today and it seems to be leaking from the pump itself. I guess I'll have to pull it off anyway to check. I'll also make sure I take the old pump with me if I need a replacement to make sure I don't get the wrong one.

Does anyone know whether you can rebuild these things, or should I just get a new pump?

You can rebuild them, but kits are hard to get. Don't forget to buy a new pump mounting sandwich plate. Mine was corroded and the gasket face was difficult to seal up. It still 'weeps' very slightly.

    Dave,
Mine did the same. Pulled the pump off, off cleaned all the surfaces both sides of the sandwich plate and applied Loctite gasket goo. Worked a treat.

How do you get them apart, with a big press?
Mine had a slight tick in the bearing last time I had it off, I figure I'd better start planning.

They are an industrial engine, cast iron water pump, repairable. Find the Isuzu distributor, buy a kit, and fit it, or get someone to fit it. Kits are off the shelf in Brisbane.

Ordinarily I would be very keen, but for such an important part I think I should probably go new. I've had cooling issues on trips before and I llike to know that everything is in top shape. Then again, last time the problem was a head gasket due to the negligence of the idiot I paid to rebuild the engine and the time before that it was just a thermostat, so maybe I should have a look!

I seem pretty indecisive this morning - maybe I'm getting in touch with my feminine side
