    4BD1T with Holset Turbo.

I didn't realise just how compact those garrett turbos are. Scroll to page 2 and 3 for the turbo pics, but the whole conversion is well worth reading.

    Interesting conversion.

I used to own a Rajay turbo that was used as part of a 2.25P turbo kit. It was HUGE - never fitted it... Was supposed to kick in around 1800 rpm.

I've spent a fair bit of time looking for a turbo to upgrade the garrett on my 4BD1-T.

I couldn't find a garrett with a compressor that had suitable efficiency at the pressure ratio I was seeking.

The HY35 was high on my list, based on the experience of those using them with the 4BT. I had started making inquiries about purchasing one with Aus dealers. But I remain concerned about the compressor being close to the surge line.

Hopefully I have found a suitable turbo now, thanks to Dougal.

When you get that sucker fitted, I'll be heading over for a test drive.

Come on, spill the beans, what is it?

I thought you were planning on fitting a disco potato?

Nothing that Garrett make, but I'll let John roll back the curtain when he's ready.

As I said above, I have been looking about for a while and from the compressor maps I could find, no garrett looked to have satisfactory efficiency at the pressure ratio I'm aiming for.

The holsets seem much better in this respect and I was getting close to laying out for a HY35, when Dougal bought another possibility to my attention.

Someone in the USA had a borgwarner R2S turbo from a Navistar International, 4.5 litre, maxxforce 5, V6 diesel) that he might sell. Checking on this, it should be great for what I want and at the price I reconned it will be worth while. It is definitely not bolt on and will need some fabrication to install. It should be interesting.

I don't mind this. I was planning to make a tube exhaust manifold to utilise the exhaust pressure pulses in any case. My project is running further behind than I would like, so I will probably make an adapter from the stock manifold for the time being.

Having said this, I don't have the turbo yet, only photos.

I used paypal to make the payment last monday. Later on paypal sent me an email saying they suspected a 3rd party had used my paypal account and they imposed limited access on my account. I checked my bank and the payment had been debited, so I felt relieved that it had gone through to the seller. I proceeded to have the limited access lifted but I could not get through one of their forms because VISA had given me a new card number and I didn't know the old one.

Today, paypal sent an email that they had canceled the payment to the seller. I spent an hour on the phone to paypal trying to sort it. I had previously faxed them documentation to prove my details, but they could do nothing about the old account number. After more time with the bank I finally got the access limit lifted and sent off another payment.

I just hope the seller hasn't decided to back out after all this. I sent 2 emails to him today, but haven't had a reply - have to allow for time differences.

After this drama, I am reluctant to say much more until it is in my hands. But I have given a couple of clues for the curious.
