Question Clutch Change - advice needed.

    Hi all,

My LT85 has given up the ghost in my Isuzu 110, and it's time to pop in the replacement gearbox (also LT85 Santana) I bought some time ago. I'll be dropping in a new clutch / pressure plate, etc. at the same time, which is good timing as mine had just started to slip when fully laden.

I have a few questions for those in the know:

    (1) Are all the part numbers in the 'sticky' thread LR items or are some of these part numbers Isuzu? i.e are the friction plates LR items and the pressure plates Isuzu? Or is everything LR?

    (2) What other parts are likely to be worn out and need replacing in addition to the friction plate, pressure plate and clutch release (throwout) bearing. There's a reference to a spigot bush in rijidij's excellent post on his 4BD1T conversion (HERE). What's this and does it need changing also?

    (3) Although my car is non-turbo, would it be worthwhile putting in the turbo spec clutch plate and pressure plate (no plans for a turbo just yet). Are there any downsides to this apart from a heavier clutch peddle action?

    (4) Have you any recommendations where to buy all this stuff from, or is the local LR dealer the best / only option?

    Thanks in advance,

    Jon

Hi Jon! I just picked up all these bits for my car - clutch started slipping in Tassie!!!

I am happy to come over and help, and/or vice versa - you can come over and give me a hand to do mine

The clutch (friction plate) is the same for V8 and 4BD1 (5 speed) - but according to JC has a fine (R380) spline (so don't get an LT95 one). I got mine from JC - it has a LR part number on the box - I can dig it out tonight if interested.

I have a near new turbo/6x6 pressure plate from Brian/Bearman. I can see if it has a PN as well. Throwout bearing is a landie part (Thanks Matt!).

The clutch that was in there was fitted by Graeme Cooper for the PO. It was supposedly "heavy duty" - and was the main reason the PO sold the car (he was old and left leg was going). However, the clutch only lasted about 105k km before it started slipping (and only 5k or so of that was with a turbo). It will be interesting to see what is in there when I pull it out. JC said he has seen some aftermarket HD clutches and Pressure plates which aren't as good quality as the genuine bits. I also had to tighten 2-3 of the bellhousing bolts which had rattled loose on the trip - seems no loctite was used on assembly.

EDIT - a mate in tassie told me he fitted a defender slave to the 4BD1T/LT95 combo in his S1 coiller hybrid. He said it made the clutch lighter.

Btw if anyone has a good set of (cross-drilled) 1.003:1 LT230 gears (or knows where to buy some), I would like to know.

    EDIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just went and checked the PNs - mine are slightly different than the sticky.

Friction Plate: AYG34637 (the same as the sticky - just the added "7")
TURBO Pressure Plate: ISUZU PN 8941322320

Thanks for the info and for digging out the P/N's Ben.

I'm sure I've seen reference on this forum to a standard friction plate and 6X6 turbo friction plate . I don't know if there are differing friction materials available as others have also said there is only one (friction plate) and the pressure plate is whats different. I'm still a tad confused, but will have a chat with the parts guy at LR.

So the pressure plate is an Isuzu item then... that should make buying it a bit cheaper, I had assumed it was a LR item after reading rijidij's thread which shows the vast difference between the truck application and the Landy one.

Re. the offer of help, that would be great. I've got the car at my place in the shed, raised on blocks and I am just about to start taking it apart. I'll pull off the transfer box and gearbox myself this weekend, see what parts I need and get them, then if I could have a hand putting it back together that would be great - gearboxes are always so hard to align when you're on your own and without the proper gear. Having said that I think I'll be getting a transmission jack from Malz! I'll return the favour with your clutch swap anytime.

Does anyone know if it's likely that I'll need a new spigot bearing and other stuff like the release lever fulcrum pin. etc?

    Cheers,

    Jon

generally you can get away without doing the spigot bearing and without replacing the pivot point.

if you have the cast iron arm your laughing but if you already have a high Ks box I think your mad not replacing the spigot if its out especially if its taken out the input bearing or the input-output support bearing.

From memory, the v8 clutch plate is considerably smaller in outside diameter than the Isuzu truck clutch (300mm).

    Indeed!
    (taken from Murray's thread)

I think the Land Rover clutch is probably a bit undersized for the job... However if it works in the 6x6 ambulances...

    Hi,

Just off to pick up my bits & pieces this morning. Re. the spigot bearing; the one in my 110 still measures 19mm ID and look pretty much OK (the bronze bush is a little scored inside). Looks like it should be fine to leave in place - in fact I'd change it as a matter of course, but it looks like the flywheel has to come off first - does anyone know if that's correct?

Also any tips for getting the thing out, it looks like a tight interference fit (tight).

    Thanks,

    Jon

    Hi Jason,

Thanks for the offer, the transfer case, gearbox, pressure plate & clutch are now out of the car. So I know what replacement parts I need.

I'm now ordering all the bits, so I guess about a week before I have all the parts to put it back together again!!

Had a bit of a set-back with Isuzu yesterday over pressure plate part numbers so didn't order that yesterday, so it'll be a week to get here from when I order it ($10 / Kg if I air freight it and it's about 12Kg!) Will probably order it Monday when I've checked my N/A pressure plate against the Turbo one Ben has (Thanks Ben!)

So until I get the bits there ain't much to do, feel free to come around for a beer anytime though!

    Jon
