4BD1 ever let you down?

I have NEVER needed to be towed.

I once ran out of fuel (when I hadn't owned it long), about 2km from the next servo...

Once, the nut on the front of the crank rattled loose and fell off. I drove about 500km (albany (WA) - home), with the crank pully just sitting in place.

Mine has 360000km on it. I believe in that time, the PO needed to be towed once when the mainshaft stripped the splines.

Now Ben, you know that's not quite true;)

As you will recall, you were in my Isuzu County when we blew the head gasket in Canada and had to limp back to Whistler in a cloud of smoke, before being towed to Abbotsford. Admittedly it was my truck and I was driving, but you were in it:p

That engine had been fully rebuilt after the previous owner cooked it - I bought it as a non-runner. The guys who rebuilt it were recommended and had a good rep, but they did a truly awful job. The engine lasted less than 30,000 before I had to redo the head and in the process found all sorts of bodges.

Just to clarify - the only time mine has been towed was when my son ran a tank dry while I was away and he did not know how to bleed it. I have also had to rescue him a couple of times, either could not get it bled or tyre trouble, but none of these have been towing jobs.

I was commenting on my 110. To be honest I completely forgot about "your" 110. But true I was in it at the time.

We could have made it home though (in low range on 2 cylinders). We probably would have single handedly started the next ice age though...

The sieve in the banjo bolt bunged up with crud shortly after I bought the car. I did not know there was one in it. Got home with it albeit slowly. Then there was the fun of finding where the obvious fuel blockage was.

I saw one at a DoD surplus sale at holesworthy that had a "leg out of bed"...and I can't image how they managed that !

be wary of all ex mil 3.9s most will have been hydraulic'd as its about the only thing that does enough damage to render the donk irreparable.

The boys cooked one up near tully, smelt of burnt oil.
Had it recovered.
Didn't find out how much damage they did.

BTW, due to the oil consumption problem I mentioned earlier (aftermarket rings scored out the liners) I ran mine almost completely out of oil. Some was burnt, some was pushed out the rear crank seal by the blowby pressure.

I was towing another rangie shell on a trailer and had the foot down for about 4 hours.
When I stopped and pulled the oil cap there was smoke coming out.
Topped it up and when rebuild time came (forget how many km) all the normal reusable parts (crank etc) were still in perfect condition.
