I use a cable shift, 6 speed Isuzu box (I have no doubt that it is stronger than an LT95). Used a cable shift lever from an old toyota corolla. It's pulled apart at moment due to swap from one vehicle to another, so I can't take install pics.

There should be several other front wheel drive vehicles with cable shift at the wreckers.

The corolla shifter has 2 cables. Each cable is pushed/pulled, one when the lever is moved forward/backward, the other when the lever is moved left/right. The Isuzu box has 2 levers (one on top, one on right side) for each cable, to select the gears.
I have to add, my stick shift setup is pretty vague and will be replaced by a linkage or cable setup sometime in the future.
But yes the Isuzu boxes are bulletproof and very compact which makes them easy to fit.

    HI Dougal
How did you fit off the tranfer case to the isuzu gearbox did you have to make up an adapter plate of sorts? Also does the gear lever and hi lo range selector come out in the same spots as with the landy gearbox? Did you have to modify the gearbox turret and rear mounts for the isuzu box to fit? Really I am asking whats involved in fitting an isuzu box to a defender with a 4BD1. Why is it that this gearbox conversion is not more commonly done?

    Kindest regards

    Hi John
I suppose my questions are the same as for Dougal about isuzu gearbox fitment. Is you vehicle a defender, if not is there going to be much difference between fitting off a defender to other Landys. It has just occured to me that I am possibly hyjacking this thread if so let us know, perhaps I should start a thread. What do you think?
    Kindest regards

    This shows it reasonably well.

    This is another angle.

This is in an 85 rangie, the gearlever, transferlever and all engine mounts are original V8 locations. This "longstick" arrangement will be similar if not identical to the position for a defender.

So the levers should all match to the original positions on my Defender and the mounts need no adaptions is this right it is sounding an easy adaption up to this point. Fitting the transfer case to the isuzu gearbox how did you achieve this does it just bolt together?
    Kindest regards

Yes the levers match up, but you'd be best to use a cable or lever arrangement while putting the gear-lever in that same position.
There is a 3" aluminium plate which replaces the rear of the Isuzu box and bolts to the old LT77 rear casing. I have plans for a steel fabrication that will do it better in one hit.
There is an adapter shaft between the Isuzu gearbox output and the LT230.

Would you consider making a couple of sets up with a view to sell us one set. Of cause costs and when are to be considered. So did you use the isuzu flywheel with your conversion???

When I get my setup working, I'll hand out the plans to anyone who wants to follow.

I pulled the Isuzu out of my bushie (79 rangie) to go in my 84 rangie.

In the process I have re-done the t/case adaptor to make it shorter.

I tried to use an LT230, but the case of the 6 speed gearbox is too wide and the front extension housing of the LT230 would interfere, unless the LT230 is moved back (but I didn't want that in a rangie - would be ok in a 110 or 130).

Thanks to the short bell housing, my Isuzu 6 speed is slightly shorter than an R380 from a 300Tdi. A 5 speed Isuzu box is shorter again (and not as fat), so the adaptor method shown by Dougal is a good approach.
