    Engine replacement

    Hi mates,
my project 110 (not quite finished yet) is originally equipped with the dreaded 2.5l Td engine. Since this engine is not a master example of proven reliability I am interested in replacing it with something more substantial, so to speak. As the 4BD1-Isuzu engine has a good reputation I am considering one as a possible alternative.
Now, as these are not too common over here I am interested to know what vehicles these engines were originally fitted to. What do I have to consider when fitting one? Are they easy to mate to a LT77 gear box? Are there any issues to speak of with this engine conversion?

    Ta for all advice!
    Cheers

The isuzu originaly came out in rovers during the early 80s, possibly in the stage ones then into the county around 84-85
They were introduced into rovers mainly for the army 110s.
and could also be found in isuzu trucks of a similar vintage
It should be a relatively easy conversion into a defer, personly i wouldn't mate it up to an lt77 box the isuzu will probably make short work of it (don't quote me on this) the strongest manual rover box option would be an lt95 4 speed but quite afew guys are running the r380 boxes with the isuzu and havn't had any probs, so if you want to go for a five speed that would be your best bet IMO

The suzi will lunch the 77.

workable matches are the r380, lt95 and the LT85.

the suzi will eventuall lunch them all. The 85 will die first, more than likely the 380 next finally the 95.

the 95 is the 4 speed.

if your going to go a conversion and want a 5 speed you might find yourself better off getting a suzi truck 5 speed and then mating it to the lt230 Tcase.

upping the idle a little so that the torque impulsing isnt so bad at idle speeds and keeping the engine spinning midrange as opposed to labouring in tall gears also helps.

I dont know of any vehicle other than a landy having the lt95.

if you source an ex truck suzi you will more than likely need to change the mating plate on the back of the engine that sits between the block and the bell housing.

    Well worth the effort tho.

Whereabouts is north of cape york??? That might help us help you.

The 4BD1 was fitted to the 1980-1995ish NPR trucks in Australia, ELF trucks in Japan, The GMC 4500(?) in the americas (inc USA and canada), etc, etc, etc. And a bunch of stationary and marine applications.

The LT77 has no hope in hell behind a 4BD1(T). I know of a 90 where it lasted, but I also know a RRC which lunched 3 in quick succession... My LT85 lasted 320000km before needing a rebuild. I am hoping it will last a lot longer this time, but if not an ISUZU box will be going in instead.
