Check plant/machinery wreckers for holset turbos. Just beware that they're physically monstrous compared to the garrett T25/28 range. Fitting them in may be a challenge.Quote:

These turbos make great boost and spool up quickly on a Cummins 4BT with adjustments to the injection pump. They should work well on a 4BD1, which is better in many ways compared to the 4BT.

So it would seem that ~20psi is the best I can hope for from my turbo.
Looking at those maps, it looks like the HY35 should spool up later than a GT28RS???

I am in a bit of disbelief about the quotes off boost pressures from 30 to 60 psi, that seems abit far fetched to me. Can anyone explain how this is possable

I think they can do it because Petrol engines are different to Diesels. Petrol engines compress a mixture of air and fuel. If you tried run that kind of boost in a petrol engine the air/fuel mixture would pre ignite. Diesels work by compressing a volume of air and the fuel is then injected into the hot compressed gas where is combusts. So in a diesel you control the combustion timing by when you introduce the fuel. As a result, if you can supply the correct amount of fuel (keep the air/fuel ratios correct) its then just a matter of how strong the engine is in order to hold those levels of boost.
a ZD30 is a moden engine compared to a 4bd1 and was designed around those parameters thus the compression, head design, head bolt position tension, injection timing, bearings the block was all designed to be turboed at higher boost pressure.
I have been reading the info from this site about turboing a 4bd1 as I have one in the shed to fit to my county. I was speaking to a landrover mechanic the other week and mentioned the boost pressures claimed on this site and he said no way could the engine handle those pressures.
So is it the general concensis that on standard internals rods pistons that with a fuel tweak and an exhaust upgrade you can run 0 to 60 psi boost through this motor. I know these motors are strong but to me it seems to far fetched.
60 psi maybe a bit over the top, but plenty are doing it , check out some of the USA sites.Quote:
