[QUOTE=the_grubb;1353792]Bolt on original LT85 transmission mount (Garry you don't get this bit, it's only for the picture)
Attachment 30081
Thats OK hopefully some one out there has one sitting around that they don't need. Gee it all looks soooooo good, I can't wait to see it fitted in myself, I just don't have any excuses ,looks like the 130 coming off the road real soon. Should enjoy driving the series 3 for a little while. In to get the motor moving along tomorrow, the connecting rods will be here in 2 weeks form the states so lots of preparation to do till then..
Garry the guinea pig
FYI: Distance between gear centres in MSA boxes is 97mm
All Garrys' gear (gearbox, adaptors, flywheel, clutch slave cylinder, nuts/bolts, 24V starter and alternator) on a pallet ready to head south.
Attachment 30213
What is your adapter length from the mount face of the LT230 to the back face of the gearbox?
Mine is about 193mm.
I look at this conversion and it is so sensible, once again I think I should change my plans for my Gog - the SIIB.
Please excuse me for the hyjack detour, but I want some specific answers. Unlike most of the people here, my issues are a little different, so to summarise. I have a SIII 110 f/c (otherwise known as a SIIB forward control, although it has a SIII clamshell type 110 chassis, SIII 1 Ton all synchromesh series gearbox/low ratio helical transfer box and it weighs 2.75 tonne tare. It races along at 70KPH (any faster and it overheats) and takes shares in Shell Oil.
My plans in the new year were to fit a Land Rover 4BD1 NA with LT85/LT230 which I already have. The LT85 because of the overdrive 5th is needed (over the LT95) to push around the 36" 9.00 16 on the 4.7:1 ENV/Salisbury diffs, the Defender LT230 gives me almost the same 1st gear and a slightly lower lo ratio. Now the MSA seems a better option, because it's a stronger box and it already has a remote shift mechanism that can be adapted to the cab over engine SIIB. I will also have to move the chassis cross member behind the gearbox.
My questions:
- does the MSA bell-housing bolt up to the Land Rover 4BD1 or do I need to change the flywheel housing to the truck model?
- What is the length from the rear of the 4BD1 (engine not flywheel housing) to the front of the new adapter?
- What is the length of the MSA-LT230 adapter?
- Which model Isuzu box would be appropriate for my 3 ton demon of biblical proportions?
- Would you make the adapter without the selector mechanism?
Hey Lotz-A-Landies,
Sounds like an awsome conversion to me.
Just some quick answers to your questions (can go more in depth if need be later);
No the MSA bell-housing does not bolt straight up to the Landrover 4BD1 flywheel housing. There are two options here;Quote:

- I can supply an adaptor ring which mates the MSA to the landrover flywheel housing
- Obtain a flywheel housing off a truck 4BD1 motor (this puts the starter motor lower than on the landrover flywheel housing which requires a specific starter motor to clear the chassis in the 110)
From the rear of the 4BD1 (not flywheel housing) to the interface of the new adaptor/back of MSA gearbox is 555mm.Quote:

Nominal for a direct replacement for the LT85 in a 110 is 175mm. This puts the mating face between the LT230 and the adaptor at exactly the same location as the mating face of a LT85 and LT230.Quote:
What is the length of the MSA-LT230 adapter?
Saying that, the design makes it realitively easy to vary the length from a minimum of about 90mm to whatever maximum length desired (with in reason).
Let me get back to you on this one when I have a bit of time to digest your ratios, weights and purpose....Quote:

Of course. I have a complete cable shift here from an NPR truck which would be perfect for your application given the distance between driver and gearbox.Quote:
