We all knew Vern was a bit backwards - now we know for sure

(I agree - looked through all the docs on Sheldon's website and couldn't see it mentioned). A cable shift sounds like a better option...

Sheldon left a message on my phone saying he's pretty sure he can fix it with a couple of extra bits

I beleive we're about to see some "rapid prototyping".

Very very sorry. Honestly didn't think it was an issue

I change gears on mine like it's the back of my hand... much faster than the previous LT85 and never miss a gear.

LHD vehicles still have the typical

    R 2 4
    1 3 5

Which mean you are moveing the stick away from you as you move up through the gears with your right hand. Yanks and Europeans don't seem to have a problem with this.

Only issue I could see is if some one new who didn't know the pattern tried to drive it. But all they would do when trying to take off or reverse is hit 5th or 4th gear and stall it when letting the clutch out.

    But as Damien mentioned, there is enough room in the Disco for the kit to have an extra link to put the pattern back to;

    R 2 4
    1 3 5

So yes, in a few weeks we will see this come to life

The Defender kit will remain with the mirrored pattern of

    4 2 R
    5 3 1

As there is simply not enough room.

Ramon (Boof Ed) off here has got just the Housing and Shaft and is putting a cable shift on his I believe.

There would be a few issues in itself to mount a cable shift up. Sure it could be done. But right now it is still only sounding like it is a better option from our arm chairs

Anyone in the engineering game know's that all designs are a compromise. My compromise was to reverse the shift pattern in the Defender to make for an easy 'bolt in' factory look.

I believe he has got hold of a toyota corolla shifter to do it (or that what I heard when he was planning it). He will have it all going and tested in the next couple of weeks I believe

In a Defender, is it just the transmission cover panels that interfere, or the firewall cutout?
If its just the panels I'd prefer to keep a conventional shift pattern and modify the panels to suit.

Steve, and everyone else, can I ask why such the preference to the standard shift pattern? I honestly can't see the problem, I must be missing something. Your thoughts would be appreciated. You all really need to come drive mine to see how simple it is......

My concern is that I've spent 30 years driving a pretty standard pattern shift, and that my County isn't my daily drive (or my wife's).
I've had numerous situations where I've been on "automatic" and got the wipers going instead of the indicators, turned off the lights on my Disco instead of the wipers etc. Doesn't happen normally when I'm THINKING about the action, but at times of higher workload (poor visibility/heavy traffic etc).

Selecting 4th or 5th instead of reverse when starting off isn't a problem, but I reckon the 3-4th shift would see me come unstuck.
The situation would be a short onramp freeway merge in heavy traffic. Hard accelleration in 3rd to get to freeway speed, one eyeball on the car in front, one on the spot I'm trying to merge into, and my brain focused on keeping an airgap around the car.
Unthinking shift to 4th - GRRRRR - GRRRRR - WTF - oh %^&$ thats reverse - speeds dropping off so missed the gap and now have 30M of semi beside me - end of onramp approaching etc.
    You get the picture.

I'm sure if I was driving it every day then I'd get used to it pretty quickly and it would become an automated action. But I'm not (and neither would my wife be).

    Anyway - thats my reasoning.

    Steve
