Urgent inf0 - Isuzu 110 and what they are!!! :)

Hey everyone! I have had my heart set on a Series 1 Discovery, but have come across an Isuzu County 110 which is most appealing given the County's reputation for toughness.

The real issue is that I know absolutely nothing about the Isuzu factor, at all. What engine, drivetrain and other mods are done? What are peoples experiences with them? Are they reliable? Would you recommend one, and what for? Enlighten the ignorant!

    Buy it!

They have an Isuzu 4BD1 and use the LT95 4 speed transmision (early Range Rover) or LT85 Santana transmission. They are unique to Australia and developed as part of a project that resulted in the Australian Army 110's and 6X6s.

IMHO The Isuzu County is probably the best Land Rover ever made.

If you don't buy it tell me where it is an I'll buy it!

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

Just do a search mate.....HEAPS of info on this site regarding Isuzu 110's.

Regarded by many as the best LR ever.....I'm partial to the V8 myself.

    Good trucks!

If you dont mind the noise and lack of power but appreciate a troublesom free engine go the isuzu, I had an after market turbo installed and got a bit more grunt out of it.

I run a V8 version now and on gas it runs a treat. Much more power and alot quieter too. Same running gear in both vehicles, the four speed gearbox has never given me and problems. The Isuzu is a great little motor, very good torque stalling is impossible in low range.

The V8 tends to run a little warm even with the thermo's, the izsuzu never gets beyond 80. Love it! Although on long trips I tend to have the earmuffs close by.

i have one and i love it.

BUT they are all about 25 years old and as with any thing thats that old they are not going to be in show room condition. so rubber bits etc may not have stood the test of time so well.

    but better than a puma

Wow, thanks for the great reponses!!!

I have no qualms about lack of comfort or speed...I ride a sportsbike daily, so even the fastest cars are gutless, and am already used to no luxuries at all. Having a seat, a roof and a heater is considered luxurious by my standards!

Being an older vehicle I totally expect a few items need some attention, but would be well worth the effort from what I have read about in the forum so far and the very helpful posts by you guys.

    To be continued...

The Engine is the Isuzu 4BD1, which, unlike all the other engines fitted to Landrovers, is a truck engine not a car or light truck engine. Compared to other engines that have been fitted it is - heavy, rough, very durable, trouble free and noisy.

Although relatively low power, with not very impressive torque figures, the torque at very low rpm is unsurpassed, making it very drivable offroad.

The LT95 four speed gearbox stands up to the engine fairly well, but it will trash the LT85 five speed (fitted from 1986) without much effort. The vibration, particularly when idling, will literally pop rivets. Front diff problems due to the heavy engine are not uncommon. On the other hand, a million kilometres from the engine would not be particularly unusual.

In general the factory airconditioning fitted to most of them is not preferred to the model without, although some are happy with it.

Most parts are readily available, although the few Isuzu parts you may need are expensive - in 490,000km I have overhauled the starter and alternator, replaced a few O rings, crankshaft seals, and several thermostats and the sump and exhaust manifold gaskets. Apart from fanbelts, radiator hoses and oil and filters, that's it.

The two biggest problems with them is that very few good ones ever come on the market, so you have to wonder what is wrong with it (rust? general neglect? accident damage badly repaired?), and the other problem is that it is over twenty years old, and may not have been looked after very well.

JDNSW has coverd it quite well, along with other posters.

i have posted else where that to have a really nice county will cost about 15K regardless of what you spend on your initial purchase. having said that 15K would be really really nice.

i will give you a my story of last Saturday.

the Wednesday before driving home the aircon stops.

Saturday is the designated fix it day. so after running around with a volt meter and figuring out the new fuesbox ( fitted by the previous owner " nice job") then pulling the control panel to se what's what. i finally discover there in no power getting from fan speed 3 to the motor. worse is that the motor will not spin very well. OK so the fan motor has craped out and taken out the wire feeding it. now tracing the wire is a bit of a major so i just bypass the speed regulator with the No 2 wire. next is the fan motor its self. pull that out, a bit tricky but doable with out taking to much else out. drown it in degreaser to clean out 25 years of crap from around the windings. the some electro clean. eyeball the brushes they seem ok. hook it up to the battery and away she goes. after about 30 seconds the out side bering housing seems to be getting a bit hot. ok i think now we know what the problems is. just get a new one and it looks like you cant pull them to bits.

ring around no Nada fat chance

ok plan B, try to get some oil in or around the back bering . that done and it seems to spin a lot better. reassemble and re fit, COOL cold are and more of it. next Saturday i will sort out that 3rd wire and then she's all back to stock.
well today it stopped again but this time it took out its fuse. i expect its that same bearing so am thinking of drilling a hole in the back of the housing and forcing some grease into it.
tomorrow i will be going to the scrap place to try and pick up some aluminum sheet of cuts and 1.5 meters of 2X2X1/4 angle to make up a folder and think about just making up a new aircon unit using dunny door parts.

    Galvanised cappings

bullet proof engine, responds well to turbo install

    cf Defenders

I think thicker aluminium body panels??

    stronger CVs

    Noise and vibration is greater

    crappier aircon
