If it's coming from the push/pull switch area I would check that the hoses are all securely pushed onto their respective steel pipes that come out of the switch first. They may be perished from age/heat and have gone hard and possibly one may have cracked or broken. The middle pipe is the vacuum source which comes from the engine. If all is ok there, the switch may be faulty/worn out. The bit inside that operates the switching from one port to another is a sliding rubber block and deteriorates eventually. Unfortunately if it is this switch it is going to cost a bit to replace, they are not cheap. The fact that it did disengage later indicates you are losing vacuum and when you got the revs up a bit there was enough to operate it. Hopefully it will be just a plastic pipe replacement and not the switch

One thing to remember is that there is no "default" on this switch, so if you lose vacuum whilst engaged, it stays there & visa versa for no centre diff. I think this is what Rijidij meant in the initial reply.

So what about dintys mates truck with the 4lb hammer problem in the drive line ???

I rekon it could be one of the bolts that holds the large low range gear to the center diff or a couple of them in my case as this is what happend to me .

Everey now and then i would get this seat cover crease'er of a bang whilst driving then one day up at wallaroo whilst climbing a rock face she locked up with a loud bang similar to a rear diff going bang but louder and right under my backside .
I managed to roll it down off the rock face and proceded to go back and forth verry slowly and it would go so far (bout 6 foot) and lock up so id go oppiset direction and same thing would happen then a bystander tells me i have oil runing out under the rangie .
Tow home get under give it a clean and find a few splits and a hole in my speedo housing so i remove the handbrake drum exposing the speedo housing only to find more cracks so off it came followed by a frw bolt heads and sections of thread that had also come out after the bolt had come out far enough to foul and snap off letting the rest of the thresd to undo its self and make a mess
I removed the center diff in situ and replaced it and the mashed speedo housing but before i did so i refitted my original gears to it and locktite'ed the low range retaining gear and it was all good from
    then on
