If the hole was blanked off and you had no dust accumulate after 80000 km of dusty condition, I would be concerned by why the 1st stage pre- clean section of the filter is not working.

Donaldson make several variations, and I'm not that familiar with the one used on Land Rover. The similar FRG air cleaner from Donaldson is designed to remove 85% of dust particles in the 1st stage (pre-clean) stage.

I'm worried that the modifications being discussed, may have compromised this vital function. It seems like not just the duck bill, but the design of the pre-cleaner section (air flow paths etc.) may be upset.

Donaldson make great air cleaners, but the success of their designs depends on the various parts working together.

IMHO the modification being discussed should be fine AS LONG AS THE PLASTIC SLEEVE IS SWAPPED end-end on the element. If it is not swapped, then the internal pre-cleaner will only serve to increase pressure drop.

Also, when the dust exit (where the duck bill fits) is converted to the air inlet, the hole should be fully opened out so there is a smooth transition at the inlet - extra pressure drop here will decrease the effectiveness of the pre-cleaner.

I suspect 85% (by mass) is a bit optimistic, but must admit I haven't tested it. Since the 1st stage works via inertial separation, the mass based collection efficiency varies greatly depending on the particle size distribution of dust you are sucking in. e.g. if you are driving through a dust storm and sucking in lots of sand it could be 99% efficient. Sitting at idle at traffic lights in a city it might be 10% efficient.

I blanked off the hole properly and sealed it up. There is obvoiuosly dust collecting in the filter housing - but at the service intervals that I adhere to the volume has not been an issue. The filter element is not loading up excesively and cleans out easily. Air entry on my filter housing is now at the right hand end and i have swapped the plastic shroud/fins to the inlet end. (Inlet is now at opposite end of the filter housing to original position). I do intend to re-instate the dust ejection port putting it the same relative position to original. At present filter life is in excess of 50000ks with absolutely no sign of dust ingress at all.

Thanks Ben, I first assumed that was the case, but given my lack of experience with those particular filters and how they are used in Land Rovers, I looked at the posts again and couldn't be sure what was going on.

The 85% I quoted was from a Donaldson catalogue. What you makes perfect sense, but I read CHT's post as though he no dust accumulate in the housing after 14 months and 80,000km. Even if the pre-filter stage only 10%, there should have been an accumulation if the dust ejector was removed and blanked. That sent off my alarm bells and lights.

I remember many years ago when I was employed as a maintenance engineer, fitters complaining that the Donaldson pre-cleaners (the clear bowl type) on our Cummins engines were no good and we should get something better. They came to this opinion because of how much dust they were cleaning out twice daily. :eek:

Sorry I miss understood your earlier post.

Does the dust outlet(the duck bill) have to be at the opposite end of the housing to the plastic sleeve ?

Guy's....sorry, but I'm still finding this a bit of an eek:eek::eek::eek:subject...After going to the trouble and spending a great deal of dosh fitting a turbocharger/turboed engine to your vehicles (that you will, god willing, hand down to your kids)you still seem to unwilling to spend an extra 300 odd bucks to get the proper housing inner and outer, that will last years. Don't you think not doing this is false economy? I know, I know, owning a Landy dictates that you must be as tight as a fishes @rse, but this is the heart of our vehicles we are talking about, and IMHO we are obligated to provide it with the freshest of air.

Sounds like a good idea,but I don't know the part numbers of the housing and filters,do you?No body that I have spoken to so far have any listing.I have been trying to get a proper filter since I began gathering bits for the conversion.Is the duck bit on the "proper" housing on the heater box end?If so what dia. is it?I'm a bit restricted for room between the housing mount and the heater box for the filter outlet/turbo inlet hose there isn't enough housing to fit a 3" dust drain.
I'm not sure but may be the 6X6 have a wider body allowing for the filter housing to remain central in the mounting bracket,does yours have a heater?
I have no gualms about spending money on my landrover

I'll have another look through my receipts, see if I can dredge them up.

Sorry guy's, had another scour through my old Landy receipts, and turned up nothing on the turbo canister/filter assembly. I purchased the lot from Trinity LR, who are the local LR stealers up here. All I asked for was a standard Donaldson assembly for the Turbocharged 6x6 LR. If any of you have difficulty in doing the same at your local dealer, maybe you should consider selling the Rover and buying a Toy;).
