    Isuzu rear main seal

    Murphy's law is at work!!
After having the gearbox out for 3 months while I refurbished the bodywork & running it occassionally to see if the rear main leaks ( & to gobsmack vistors with the noise).
It now has decided to start leaking.
It started a month ago - maybe 600 k's only- & seems to be getting worse, about a teaspoon when stopped overnight.
What are the chances of it getting on the clutch plate if I go another month?

Not much, if you leave the plug out. Mine leaked this much or more every time I stopped for years before it got on the clutch plate. And having replaced the clutch and rear main seal I now find the gearbox is leaking as well, so it is going to have to come out again!

    yep, that'll do it....

to confirm that its engine oil and not box oil add some hydraulic dye to the oil in the box or run it on atf for a while and monitor for a colour change.

I always find that the oil pump cover on the LT95 warps causing and unholy leak and oil pouring out every time you stop.
While its apart pull the oil pump apart get some wet and dry and a sheet of glass to make it all flat again it really helps.
Dont know much about Isuzus but I would look at the pommy component before the Japanese one lol

In my case the rear main seal was leaking - and of course, the engine oil being a distinctive colour, I blamed that, although I probably would have taken a closer look at the gearbox if I had not been in a hurry!

Here are seal numbers as posted in another thread.

    2. The new type one is BYG2767 (LR number) Much better seal I am told but I havent fitted one yet......Apparently this is made by SKF. These are the numbers I was given to reference the SKF one, 200610-0218-03-03 #550651. You will either need 2 pieces of pipe ( 1 X 75mm and 1 X100mm) to fit it or the proper fitting tool.......... Brian
I put one of the SKF seals in my 4BD1T while it was out.

They are a Chicago Rawhide seal (the company was bought by SKF) and also have a CH???? number clearly shown on the seal, but I couldn't find anything in either CH or SKF catalogues.

Edit: Bearman said You will either need 2 pieces of pipe ( 1 X 75mm and 1 X100mm) ... There is a mistake there - 75mm is incorrect.

The seal has a sleeve on the inside that is not separable from the seal. It is necessary to have 2 pieces of pipe, one to fit the inner sleeve onto the crank (100mm od crank), and another to fit the seal into the housing (125 id housing from memory). They don't need to be used simultaneously - just fit the sleeve a little, then the seal a little, repeating until seal and sleeve are in place.

I have another number (may be military number) for this seal assembly NSN: 5330-66-149-1912

The Isuzu part numbers for the oversize rearmain seal and wear sleeve are:
    Sleave 5123190033
    Seal 2A9105

The wear sleave is hardened and chrome plated.

There is also a later seal that has a wear sleave as part of the seal assembly. I have the over size seal and wear sleave noted above fitted to my vheicle - all still going well after 80000ks since fitment

I didn't want to use the standard seal which came with the rebuild kit so I ordered the BYG2767 expecting it to come with a wear sleeve, but as it turns out they no longer come with the sleeve or are they still available(so the parts people tell me).So after doing more searching I read about the isuzu 2 part seal which CHT is running, which has a thick wear sleeve and larger ID seal to suit.I rang the dealer today with above part numbers and 2A9105 didn't come up,so he matched the seal to suit the wear sleeve and came up with 1096253200.When I pick them up tomorrow hopefully it will be correct.
    Cheers Eric
