has anyone looked into the tremec TR6060 as a suitable box.
    if a TR6060 - LT230 adapter could be found?

or is the nissan 5 speed about the only practical way to go for a manual LSx

Have an internet search or buy a copy of Hemmings and look for wreckers in the USA. Chev, Cadillac, Buick, GMC make a wide range of 4WD's. You can probably buy the whole engine and trans package for less than the cost of conversions.

The Tremec 6 speed gearboxes are very long. I don't think you would get one to fit in a Rangie because there isn't much room to move the transfer case rearwards (floor gets in the way). I have a T56 Magnum at work I can measure if wanted.

Have you thought of finding a wrecker in LA and buying an engine, transmission, wiring, electronics complete from a USA 4WD? All the big 3 make powerful 4WD's by the tens of thousands and there must be thousands of them in wrecker's yards.
