doing the numbers ((235x0.85x2) + 16x25.4) = ???? is a joke because there are no two 235s the same dimension. I am sure that you could find a 235 that is only 48mm taller than an OEM tyre, just as you could find one that is 78mm taller than OEM.
The legislation AFAIK says "<50mm" it does not say "< 50 calculated from some company lettering on the side of the tyre mm".
I have four different flavour 235s with at least 30mm in OD between them.
"Small for size" are oldskool BFG AT, Hercules Terratrac, Dunlop Road Slippers.
