Most insurance says 'any mods you let us know about and are legal' or something to similar effect so they have a get out clause to not pay out in an accident if your mods are to blame.

I know it's stupid, I'm prepared to pay a bit of cash to have my car engineered, I could legally get the height changed up to 100mm if I keep the tyre size within 50mm, I want to change by less than 75mm but have an 8mm larger diameter tyre than 58mm and the bods at DoT say no :(

Have you actually put a tape measure on the tyres.
doing the numbers ((235x0.85x2) + 16x25.4) = ???? is a joke because there are no two 235s the same dimension. I am sure that you could find a 235 that is only 48mm taller than an OEM tyre, just as you could find one that is 78mm taller than OEM.

The legislation AFAIK says "<50mm" it does not say "< 50 calculated from some company lettering on the side of the tyre mm".

I have four different flavour 235s with at least 30mm in OD between them.
"Small for size" are oldskool BFG AT, Hercules Terratrac, Dunlop Road Slippers.
"Large for size" are Bridgestone MT, MIchelin (7.5R16 thou) and

I am doing that, the problem I have is I can't find the diameter of the originals that Landrover fitted.

Am I right in thinking D2 came standard with Michelin Latitudes?
They are still available are they not?

My 2003 D2a came with Michelin XPC tyres. No longer available unfortunately.

The XPC in my shed is a bare tyre, not on a rim. The tyre has a convex shape across the tread and measures 730mm diameter at the centre of the tread, or about 715mm at the tread edges. It has about 5mm tread depth left, so you could add approx 10-15mm to the above diameters at full tread depth.

That's just the ratio (I.e 235/70/16) and different manufacturers have slightly different diameters within that size.

Even though there is a variation in overall tyre diameter between manufacturers this is somewhat irrelevant.

If and when your vehicle is checked for complaince, the actual tyre diameter from the tyre manufacturer generally does not get used due to the variations, instead they use what the tyre standards book lists for a particular width and aspect tyre as listed on the vehicle tyre placard.

To legally come within the 50mm diameter increase from what I recall you are looking at 245/75 R16 or 265/70 R16 or any tyre that comes in under 788mm (31") overall diameter.
