I read they proudly say the next defender will have even MORE electronics!!

But aside from that, my project is quite different to a defender.

Four wheel independent, alloy chassis, designed for expeditions??, if so it will be interesting. Or for posers with low profile tyres only?

I grew up offroading in a rangie but they have lost their way in key areas.

When you compare apples with apples, current models are far more capable offroad than they have ever been - the issue whether you are prepared to put up with damaging a very expensive vehicle.

And they are more complicated and can be more expensive to fix

You could take a 2 door rangie offroad without any modifications and it was very capable in all conditions, including deep water, and you were unlikely to damage it.

Take a new unmodified range rover off road and there is quite a decent chance you will pinch or otherwise damage a tyre, gouge a rim, and or rip off a piece of plastic bodywork. If you flood the interior its possibly a write off (?).

In the past, with money no object, you would very seriously opt for a rangie for offroading.

Nowadays, money no object, you would not choose a range rover.

I would! Unfortunately money is an object for me.

Money no object? How about a Lamborghini Militaria? Or dare i say it without slapping myself, a Mercedes G Wagon extreme thing or a Landcruiser 200 Series? Or a custom build? A range rover with those low profile tyres would be painfully annoying, and you wouldnt be confident you would make it home. No luxury in changing a tyre or having to walk. I am talking about proper offroading, not just an undulating dirt track.

Anyway, regarding my justification for a custom build vs a new defender, back in about 1990 i predicted a number of new features of the L322 range rover. In a similar way, aspects of my custom build could be the kind of design land rover take with the defender after the one that will supposedly arrive soon, if they have the courage to raise the bar.
