    6x6 axles into 4x4

I'm assuming the front 6x6 axle is a direct fitment to a 4x4 with possibly differing panhard and drag link.

For the rear axle, has this been done as the 6x6 is leaf sprung and the 4x4 coil sprung? My question mainly surrounds how do you produce an A-frame mount onto the axle as the Salisbury diff housing is cast. The coil Salisburys have a set of A-frame mounts in the casting, however the leaf sprung variants dont have this.

I assume this is from the civvy 6x6.

Doesn't the Perentie 6x6 have a wider track than the 4x4? The body is definitely wider.

Yes, looking at the Perentie 6x6 axles with the wider track.

    Wider track, Perentie or 101?

    1. Yes, the perenetie has a wider track

2.Unless I am mistaken, the civilian 6x6 also has a wider track at the rear.

3.As pointed out the leaf spring suspension on both 6x6s is a major issue to fit the 6x6 axle to a 4x4.

    4. Best approach would be to replace the salisbury casting with one from a 4x4 or lengthen the side tubes on a 4x4 axle and fit the half axles from a 6x6.

    5. Front axle is a bit simpler - would need different panhard rod and draglink - and move either the suspension towers on the frame out or the seats on the axle in.

    6. It would seem that major body mods would also be needed.

Thanks John! Isn't the front chassis half of the 6x6 the same as in the 4x4? I thought they replaced the rear half only?

I think I have a photo of a bare 6x6 chassis on my PC. I took the pic at British Motor Imports last year.

    I'll have a look.

    Edit:

    Aha!

Thanks so much Ron, that is an entirely fabricated chassis after all!

At least coil spring perches is an easy one to sort out.

If my memory is correct, that applies to the civilian 6x6, but not the Perentie.

Rick Billington from Kingpin fabrications sells a weld on LR suspension bracket kit to retrofit onto a GU patrol. there is an A frame weld on boss, coils brackets, trailing arm brackets, etc. if you knew the tube OD of the 6x6 housing, Rick can mod the brackets to suit the radius. He also sells upgraded coil brackets. I had him make up a bracket that is larger and thicker than LR spec because i cracked my mount with air suspension (and probably 500,000 kms of abuse).

    PATROL AXLE CONVERSION BRACKET KIT
    – KINGPIN Fab

In the alternative YRM in UK sell weld on bracket kits for LR axle housings. Not sure about the A frame boss.

The only tricky part is welding the A frame boss onto the caste centre.

This is far easier than other suggestions of re-tubing a civvy sals. can also convert to disc brakes using all 300tdi sals off the shelf parts. only variation is the calliper bracket. its 29mm thick and i found it had to be ground to 26mm to centre the calliper over the rotor. that was using the 290mm 300 tdi rotor. TD5 and puma used 298mm rear rotor. Not sure of the offset of that rotor which might be better suited to the 29mm calliper bracket.

    Have fun
