Harold Hosterman of Ohio, known as Hal, made single and twin overhead camshaft conversions for Ford T & A engines as did quite a few others notably Frontenac and Roof. He also made the complete engine pictured. Known as a HAL "Big Bertha" Indy engine. The one pictured is a 210 cubic inch version for "Champ Car" racing. Speedy Smiths Museum of American Speed in Lincoln, Nebraska, has two HAL "Big Bertha" engines displayed. One is incorrectly identified on their website as a Roof.
HAL engines won the AAA championship in 1936 and the USAC in 1946. Championship races were conducted on tracks at least one mile in circumference over a minimum distance of 100 miles.
Of the few "Big Berthas" surviving I have not seen any two identical in external appearance. Fuel pump, water pump, magneto, their positioning and drive, breathers, oil pan inspection covers all vary. Some have cam cover bolts like the one pictured, some have a single row up the centre.
The one pictured lives in Brisbane and it and the car it powered are getting a quality restoration and should be on the track in the New Year. Purchased from Sydney where it had sat for 26 years awaiting attention.
