I often wonder whether the obsession with parity has made the racing less interesting. The cars are just too similar.
Imagine this scenario:
One brand of car has been allowed to have a better power to weight ratio, so will be faster out of the corners than the others.
Another brand will have better aerodynamics, so will be faster at the end of the straight.
Another will have a better chassis and suspension so will be faster around the corners.
Another will have better brakes, so will gain an advantage going into the corners.
As long as there were races at circuits that suited each brand, there would still be a form of overall parity.
Imagine how much overtaking there would be with such a scheme as different brands would be faster on different parts of each track. Imagine how many different winners there would be throughout the season.
No doubt some will say it wouldn't work or would be too difficult to administer, but isn't that what we had when Mini Coopers, Mustangs, Chargers and a few others used to do battle back in the good old days.![]()

I wasn't thinking that the cars needed to be based on production vehicles. I am arguing that the racing has more uncertainty and more excitement when the cars are different. I don't care what they are base on.
Anyway, nothing beats the little Aussie Racing Cars for excitement. Can you name any other class of racing where cars can go around a corner four abreast and any one of them might be the one that comes out in front?![]()

Gotta disagree there.
Nothing wrong with that category at all, but it simply does not have any of the attributes necessary to be a main event.
What we have, is what we have.....it will "evolve", just like all of our racing forms have......unless,......there ain't enough dollars in Aus to support this sort of thing, and that situation could be just around the corner?
Cheers, Pickles.
yes, back when F1 was in Adelaide, they had superkarts run. The pole sitting supercart would have been 3rd or 4th row on the F1 grid. Compare that on a $ for $ basis and thats where I say a little silly.......
I think F1 is great. I think Can-am the best of track racing
yep, from what I can gather they where the fastest cars period, and this stuff went over to Lemans type racing as much as rules would allow....Porsche 917 being the pinacle and doing something like 411km/h down the Mulsane straight
some really free thinking which was great.
