Any with a maritime bent ?

I am also interested in ships and maritime history, as you will see if you visit my website at www.gayundah.vze.com

I am wondering if others share this interest ?

I was thrilled that when I visited Perth I had the opportunity to visit the Shipwreck ghalleries in Freo and saw 'Batavia'.

I wouldn't say I was a maritime buff but I always take note of any shipwrecks and military type naval museums on my travels.

I saw the Ballina Naval Museum in January. That was pretty cool. They had one of those balsa (???) rafts that sailed from somewhere to Ballina. It is displayed in full sail. They needed a huge extension to house it but they managed it.

Hopefully will get around to obtaining my scuba ticket soon so I can investigate the under water wrecks 8)

I am interested in marine stuff, too. My last job in Telstra before redundancy was Marine Manager in the international side. The marine bit referred to these things (this one is the CS Pacific Guardian - previously based in Suva, Fiji then Newcastle, NSW):

Yes. Owner of a 37ft schooner, currently moored at Tin Can Bay, but planning to bring it home shortly to work on it.

Also I collect books on the subject, and have a very large collection of accounts of small boat voyages, plus many books on maritime history, including a 1926 edition of Hakluyt's Voyages and a facsimile copy of his 1589 edition. Other books include a large number of the Hakluyt Society publications, books on the history of marine engineering, books on naval history, books on specific ships, including Vasa, Victory, Great Britain, Great Eastern, Monitor, Shanendoah, etc.

Cool. A man of great taste in ships, it's clear.

    Well hello sailor

No seriously, I have a reasonable interest, didn't have much choice as my father did 26 yrs in the RAN, served in Korea, Vietnam, was on one of the mine sweepers that picked up bodies and survivors from the Melbourne Voyager collision. My Grandfather, dads father was a crewmember of HMAS Sydney that was sunk off WA in 1941 with all hands (645) lost so have a great deal of interest in that as to this day there has never been a full explaination of the exact details and plenty of government coverup.

I was even going to join up at 15 as a junior recruit except the old man wouldn't let me.

Guys, is there anyway you can place a story every now and again about different ships etc into this thread. That way those of us that don't know much about it can learn ffrom your experience???

I was thinking something along the lines of the Darwin Bombing thread!
