Thread: New (non V8) supercars.

Noticed that,....and a great concept, IMHO.
With twin cab Utes being so popular (Colorado is set to be Holden's No 1 seller!), this revised category makes very good sense....Lots of other makes have these things, so many more can be involved.
Not sure what engine mods will be allowed, if any, but for differing makes, there'll have to be some sort of parity.
Some have said they'll be "slow". Well they might be "slower" than the V8 Utes, but when they're all racing around together, you won't notice any speed difference. Remember HQs?...How slow were they, but they were real crowd pleasers. And I was watching a race last year, can't remember which circuit it was from, but the race was for little 1.5L diesel utes, Great Wall or something like that,......I almost switched off the TV, but then the race started, & there were 20 or so of these things, & it was REALLY good,...I was surprised,...I certainly didn't notice that they were "slow" from a TV perspective, although they obviously were!
Anyway, I reckon Colorado V Ranger V HiLux etc, will be good.

I have a friend who race's in the V8 ute's and the best thing is the carnage they bring to the spectator , cant see that continuing but if they get enough entrants with similar HP it could be ok.


I have been a fan of the sport for a long time but think they will loose me as a fan with all the change's coming.

Spent about 3 years as crew for a mate's HQ (and got my CAMS licence in it ) and they were a lot quicker than people think. IIRC, the LJ Toranas were doing high 55's low 56s around Oran Park (western Sydney) in their heyday. The HQs were doing similar times when we were playing with them. I am not a real fan of the "biffo" in any class of motorsport but the proposed new ute class will draw quite a crowd IMHO.

Were they the 202 HQ's or the V8's ? they still have the HQ 202 category up here at hidden valley , and they get up and boogie real good for a big car with a 6cyl engine.

When we were running them, they all were 4 door sedans running 202s and 3 speed boxes. The Bridgestone "Ducaro" was the control tire on either a 7 or 8 by 14 rim.

Think the only thing that may have changed with the cars up here is they use whatever tyres they like but the rest is the same by the sounds.

The HQ's were the greatest racing, always super entertaining. I remember the RD at Amaroo getting up them for using the armco coming onto the starting straight. They said one bloke repaired a panel and it came back 20kg lighter (or something), I guess the bog!

The only thing I've seen better than the HQ's in the wet for entertainment have been in QLD was a Holden Gemini class in the dry. The would spin these things half way down a dry straight! Would love to have seen them in the wet.
