I've been to the circuit, driven around it several times both ways in my road car, but never been there for the actual race.
A very good friend of mine, an ex President of the HSVOC used to go up for the 3 days of practice, Quali, etc, and then He would drive home on Saturday night to watch the race at home, on TV on Sunday. I know another guy that went for 30+ years in a row, until He passed away. He simply would not miss it.
It'd be good to go, but getting there, crowds, parking, accommodation etc, naahh, can't be bothered, the only way I'd go is if I got some "corporate deal", but not knowing the right "corporate" individuals, there's not much hope of that!
Being the enthusiast that I am, as are many of my friends, I have several opportunities each year to watch it as a group, but I actually prefer to be at home, watching it by myself (with Wifey of course, who watches the race from time to time, but more importantly provides appropriate cuppas etc!), and I know a few others who are the same!
All I ask for, is a rain free race, there are those who think that rain "adds" stuff, not me, I prefer a good, fast, incident free race.

By the way Zeros, re your post, if you watch the TV coverage (Foxtel is best IMHO, but not everyone agrees!) over the 3 days, take note of the pit lane comment stuff, you will definitely be "knowledgeable" by race end!

I've watched the race from the top of the mountain a few times. I think once when the real cars were going around (loved it when the R32 GTR one [wink11]) and also the first year of the V8's.

I also watched 2 of the 12 hours - both times the RX7's won (from memory).

Me - I prefer to watch it from home, because as others have said - you get better coverage.. I've "experienced" the neanderthals behaviour on the top of the mountain, and don't wish to experience it again.. Things may have changed since I was last up there though. I did contemplate taking the 101 up and camping there, but decided against it..

Yep - the day in front of the TV, with various supplies (read: food & grog) and I'll probably watch some of it this year...

I'd like Lowndes to win - not because of the car he's driving, but because of the driver...

Yes Grey Ghost, I've heard & seen the rubbish stuff that can go on up at the top of the mountain,...definitely not my scene.
I reckon the overwhelming majority of fans would like Craig to win, and ya know what, He's got a great car, a great crew, and a great team, so he absolutely could.
However, the cars are so equal, that with a bit of luck (and you do need some luck at Bathurst!), anybody basically in the top 20 has a chance,....then ya've got safety cars, accidents, wrong fuel strategy, tyre wear etc etc etc, it's a real lottery, which IMHO is what makes the race......You sure ain't gonna see a Brock/A9X scenario with a driver winning by six laps because the car was so good!

I'll watch it too. Even been to the Gold Coast race a couple of times.
My brother is a mad fan who goes every year with several mates. He's told me a few stories about what happens on the mountain. Not my scene.
The TV coverage is so good that actually being there you would miss so much. Mind you, it's a special thing to stand next to the fence and have one of those cars blat past just metres away - hard to describe.

Used to love spending a bit of time on the Mountain with the hoons when I used to go - it has changed a heap though in the last 10 or so years according to a mate that's been gong for 25 plus years, I haven't been for some time. Used to be ****ed idiots driving around unregistered cars - how no one got killed is beyond me. It has been sterilised a bit though as now you can't even have a motorised esky or couch any more which sort of sucks the fun out of it a bit
IMO.

Haven't been back since they made it all 'family friendly' everywhere - that's not a criticism either, it's bought in a whole different demographic but some of the fun that used to be had is very much frowned upon these days - can't even stuff some fireworks in your mates tent when he pikes it early any more... [bigwhistle]

Hmmm, just trying to remember the last time I was there - it was 2 years after that HUGE wet weekend when there was a torrent of water running down the pit lane - never been so wet in my life, couldn't even get a tent peg to stay in the ground... :D. So, when was that? I'm probably going to feel old when someone tells me the answer...

No, after that - the race itself wasn't that wet, just a few afternoon showers but it bucketed down on Thursday and Friday and rained all night Saturday clearing in the early hours of Sunday morning - I've never seen so many bogged cars in one spot - the car parks were quagmires. I think Friday morning there was a foot of water running down pit lane at one stage. It would require someone else who was there to remember it I think, but be stuffed if I can remember the year - would have been 15 or 20 years ago. Had to sleep in the car as the tent wouldn't stay up and no one at all managed to get a fire going. We were camped at the Vietnam Vets campsite - it was almost beyond words how bad it was. :)
