The markers know whats going to happen,, in the old days the tackled player could play the ball forward if there were no markers. Since dissallowing that as an option the ball has to go backwards, and standing to the side, as a marker, is a great advantage, instantly stopping/cutting off the dummy half runners. If the tackling side can get a supposed advantage by "Dominate" tackles, surely if they dont dominate, they should mark-up properly?
The markers, even if in the correct position are still in an excellent position to tackle the one-off runners,
and there are a lot of one-pass plays these days,,
maybe the real reason they want to keep the markers on side,,?????

Good point mate. They have to do something though, cause as you say, the inconsistency is dreadful.
