It was not a state of origin, it was a massacre

But then, Queensland has the best players of any game
The down side is the hopeless government...

Full credit to QLD - they had more mongrel in them. On paper, there pack looked softer than NSW. But they really gave it to them. They ambushed them perfectly. It's the qld X factor.

But it amazes me how the same ref can go from blowing only 6 penalties in game 1, to 16 in the second game. The queenslanders did nothing but whinge about his performance in game 1. His ego cops a bashing over 3 weeks, so he goes soft in game 2. The second try was off a forward pass from Inglis. Mason gets pinged for a strip, five minutes after nsw were stripped of the ball and a scrum is set - QLD feed - even after 2 looks on the big screen.

The game needs some major rule changes, which would help the ref and improve the flow. This may bring some healthy debate:

    1. Stripping rule - get rid of it. If the ball carrier cannot hang on to the ball, whether there's one or four in a tackle, tough.
    2. Markers - get rid of the "not straight" rule, and allow them to stand to the side.
    3. Scrums - what a joke. And it galls me when a ref is there telling a prop to put his foot back, scrum after scrum without penalty, and giving 12 professional footballers a scrummaging lesson. Either bring back properly contested scrums, or get rid of them altogether and have a turnover.
    4. Timeouts during goal kicks - tries/penalties. Half a dozen tries in a game, six conversion attempts. Half a dozen penalties in kicking range. 12 kicks at goal at 90 seconds per kick - 10 minutes game time lost as the kicker lines it up. Make it a time out and allow for more footy. That's what the punters are paying to see.
    5. During origin week, suspend club games.

Game 3, whether you think it's rigged or not, (and i don't) will be a sell out. TV audience will be massive, here and overseas. The origin circus comes to town. I love it. Go the Blues!!!

    spot on Mick,,
ref had a shocker,, not that it would have made a difference to the outcome.
I think Buderius had EVERY right to keep asking,,

1- I think the current strip rule is OK,, just needs consistency
2- if you let the markers stand up,, you'd need a 15m line. not good.
3- agree. what is the point of a scrum in todays game?
    4- YES!
5- a month off (the weekend games either side of the origin game) is a long break,, maybe play them solo on a weekend?

    Thanks Pedro

Yes, lack of consistency is the problem. At some point, in a 2/3/4 man tackle, a tacklers hand/arm is going to come in contact with the ball carrying arm for leverage etc. If the ball comes loose or pops out, it's up to how the ref or video ref interprets what they saw. Get rid of the rule, we get rid of the inconsistency and game altering decisions.

Maybe a compromise on the markers is the go. 1st marker needs to be straight, 2nd marker behind to either side. It's one less thing to police and might give the ref more chance of keeping them back 10 metres.

Agree with the weekend - Saturday or Sunday evening, with all club games off. If origin is played on the Sunday, have some sort of 7's tournament/gala day/golden oldies game etc on the Saturday, with a mix of 1st graders and toyota cup players. I don't know, but watching Melbourne play with, what was it, 11 players out on origin duty, is ridiculous. Love the footy!!
