    Burying the Dead: Pontiac G8 faces recall over faulty taillamps, tire-pressure sensors

    General Motors may have already buried its Pontiac division, but the brand's recent passing isn't stopping a posthumous recall campaign by the automaker and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

    The action, which covers some 35,038 Pontiac G8 sedans from the 2008 and 2009 model years, stems from two potential issues:

    1) The brake pedal position switch may be incorrectly programmed, which NHTSA says could lead to the brake lamps operating in a constant state of illumination, leaving trailing motorists unable to tell whether the G8 driver ahead of them is stepping on the binders or not. The defective taillamps could therefore contribute to an accident.

    2) In another programming issue, certain G8s make have tire pressure monitoring systems loaded with incorrect values, which could result in the system failing to identify under-inflated tires, potentially leading to reduced handling abilities and/or tire failure.

    "With the building of the Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics's 8000 CEU car carrier Faust, out of Stockholm, in June 2007 the car carriers entered a new era called the LCTC (Large Car & Truck Carrier)."

    CEU=car equivalent unit

    35,000 is not many by GM and USA manufacturing standards. At one time Chev. were making 10,000 small block engines per day, and Buick were producing 7,000 V6 engines per day. The V6 was used by other divisions as well as Buick. Think on this. GM was also making other engine familes in Chev. and their other divisions, in-line 4's and 6's, V4's, big block Chev's, other V8 engine families, diesels, etc. For many years, Cadillac claimed to be the only mass producer in the world of luxury cars. The sheer scale of US manufacturing capacity and their domestic market has to be seen on the spot to be appreciated. One customer bought 12,000 GMC trucks in a two year period. A relatively small scale maker like the old White Motor Corporation considered a "fleet order" to be a minimum 200 vehicles. White once got an order from Roadway for 1,100 Road Boss 2 prime movers.

    Record deal for TTS Ships Equipment

    TTS Ships Equipment has won a record-breaking contract with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Japan. The contract comprises cargo access equipment for the world’s largest ro-ro vessels that will be built in Nagasaki for Wallenius Lines and Wilh Wilhelmsen, for deployment by their joint venture shipping line Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics (WWL). The four giant vessels will be delivered in 2011 and 2012. As previously reported in WorldCargo News , the LCTCs have a cargo volume of 138,000 m3, close to 10% more than WWL’s most recent car carriers (8000 CEU).
    “We are very pleased. This is by far our largest order ever, hence a very nice way of celebrating our 25 year anniversary,” said Stellan Bernsro, MD of TTS Ships Equipment. “We are presently working on several contracts, including a series of 10 car carriers for Wallenius Lines and Wilh Wilhelmsen.”
    The new generation ships have a length overall of 265m and the cargo volume is divided in ten decks of which three are hoistable. TTS Ships Equipment will design and deliver 3000t of cargo access equipment for each vessel.
    “This is several times more than our typical order,” said Nils O Ericsson, sales director at TTS Ships Equipment. “But this contract is not just about massive size and weight. Several details have new, innovative design. This includes lightweight hoistable car decks, electric instead of hydraulic operation as well as radio remote controlled deck and ramp operation.”
