G'day All,
Well this is Day Two of wearing my new Scleral contact lenses. My left eye has taken to them like a duck to water. It only took two goes to get it in. During the first attempt some of the saline fluid must have come out of the lens so it had an air bubble and I could not see properly. The lens came out really easily. I filled the lens back up and pop in it went.
The right eye well that is a whole different story. Despite my prising the lids open I cannot put the lens anywhere near the eye without blinking as soon as the lens gets anywhere close to the eye. I had it in 3 times within 3/4 of hour's worth of attempts. Each time I scored an air bubble. I figured giving myself an hour before an appointment in town would be plenty of time - wrong. I actually put my old lens in the right eye because I had to drive. I got back home took the old lens out and waited an hour. I tried a different technique and I got the new contact in second go, without any air bubbles. Then a while later my eye started to hurt so I tried to get the lens out. It took numerous attempts to get the lens out so now I have a swollen eye.I never - ever had such troubles with my old lenses - well before they started to attack my eyes.
It looks like I might have to give the right eye a break tomorrow until it settles down.
Hopefully I will learn the correct technique and my right eye will begin to play nice. I watched the recommended how to insert & remove Scleral lenses YouTube videos and my right eye will have none of it. You would think the trouble free technique for the left eye would work on my right eye since they are both my eyes - nope. I wonder if there is a surgical instrument that prises eye lids open and keeps them apart - that could be the trick.Once the lens is in the right eye I could just take the instrument away - bingo!
Anyway, they reckon practice makes perfect. I just hope Day 3 finds me has me finding the fail-proof, sure fire method of insertion for my right eye.
P.S. it is 11:45 pm and I am just back from the Emergency Centre of the hospital because I looked at why my right eye was sore. I will be back to the hospital tomorrow and then off to the eye specialist - bugger!
P.P.S I have spent three hours in the Emergency Department of the hospital today - Friday and I have been referred to the eye specialist whom I can see at 8:00 Monday morning. Until then I have to keep my right eye as a contact lens free place - bugger, not happy Jan.
This morning with my left eye I put the same sized scleral lens in first go. There was no trouble fitting it, or even the slightest hesitation at all. You would think since both eyes are attached to the same head there would not be so much difference between either eyes.
Kind Regards
Lionel
I guess it's like anything, Lionel. Just a matter of getting used to it. Persevere, mate you'll get there.![]()
G'day All,
I am back from the Ophthalmologist and I just have to put drops in my right eye for a couple more days. After that I can start taming the right contact lens again. Or it will begin taming me again
My left contact lens was described as a "wonderful fit" and I could read the smallest line on the eye chart![]()
With my left eye that is, my right eye reading the eye chart was a totally different story![]()
Oh well they reckon practice makes perfect. I sure have more respect for these type of lenses now as I know from first-hand experience that they can bite! Plus they have VERY Big teeth too!
Kind Regards
Lionel
Great that you're getting on top of it Lionel.
If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.
AS I now have a daughter living in WA as well as the other one in Bundaberg, I have been setting my computer up for Skype so we can keep in contact cheaply as well as live video.
Anybody else here use Skype?. I'm a novice and still feeling my way. Daughter in Bundaberg is on Skype and I haven't sent any Skype messages yet, but my daughter and I will try to contact each other on Skype next weekend. Our working shifts make it hard to try before then.![]()
Hello All,
Tomorrow marks my ability to wear my new right lens again after I damaged my eye with it last Thursday. Today marks my wearing my left contact lens successfully for a week![]()
.
Notice only two dancing bananas not my usual complement of 3 joyous dancing bananas. I am reserving that for marking weeks of being able to successfully insert and remove both lenses.
I think I may have a new ritual too. That of taking out the contact lenses at around 2:30 in the afternoon since putting them in early in the morning. I have had to take out the left lens and clean it then put it back in two afternoons in a row. Looks like the era of putting in the lenses in the morning and only taking them out until after 11 at night is a thing of the past. With the old, smaller lenses they could be blinked, turned or slightly rubbed to clear any gunk from under the lens. Then it would clear up.
The new lenses are much bigger and they are a much better fit - dust-proof and water proof in fact. The only disadvantage is that they are not self-cleaning within the eye.
I am looking forward to be able to ride my treadly again and not being smote down by a minuscule speck of dust. A speck of dust can be a small particle of stone that gets trapped between the hard contact lens and proceeds to scratch and cut the surface of the cornea. I have been there and done that! It is not a fun thing to have happen while cars and trucks are whizzing by.
I am a big bloke. at 185 cm tall and I have been dropped on my arse numerous times with a speck of dust under my old lenses. Then you proceed to claw at your eye just because of a speck of dust that would fit on the point of a pin. It is not a fun or pleasant thing to happen; one has to remain calm while taking the lens out saying to oneself, "don't panic - breathe, remain calm while removing the lens - breathe". I really hope the new lenses live up to their dust-proof reputation.
One time I stopped a railway official to ask for directions in Brisbane and the lady was really nice to me. Exceptionally kind and very understanding. When I walked away I worked out why. I must have had a speck of dust in my eye and it was streaming a line of tears down my face. I didn't feel it at the time. I touched my face while walking away and realised what had happened. The fun of wearing my old contact lenses. There I was a bearded big bloke with my suitcase on wheels asking directions. With tears streaming down my face; I must have looked a sight!
So far with my left eye the new, larger scleral lens has been great and really comfortable to wear. I just have to master the correct technique with my right eye starting tomorrow
Kind Regards
Lionel
Keep plugging away at it Lionel, you will get there![]()

I have been using skype for about 4 years now, on and off. I mainly use it now for video chats with people overseas on when gaming.
