Had Virginia stayed with the Union, Robert E. Lee would have been a Union general. His loyalty was with Virginia, not necessarily with one side or the other.

About 20 years ago I had a chance to visit the Gettysburg battle site and museum. Quite eerie seeing the hill and then distant woods where Pickett led his charge from. Especially seeing the distance they would have marched into heavy fire.

    Thanks for the interesting links.

Yes, what a waste of life. The South was always going to lose a war of attrition. I ask myself, would I be brave enough to march into that?. Hopefully that question will never have to be answered. Still, I guess, that was normal for the day, if you consider Waterloo, & other battles, even the 1914/18 War. Sad, really, Bob
I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking

The formation of the Confederacy. Interesting, Virginia was one of the last to go. Most of the senior Officers from both sides served at West Point, learning their trade. Bob
