The story behind this heartbreaking photo - Life & Style - NZ Herald News
The final moments of a much loved police horse comforted by an officer were captured in this photo.
Known as Charlotte, the six-year-old horse was a member of the Houston Police Department who died after being hit by a truck.
In a tribute to their fallen comrade, the Houston Police Department posted a picture to their Facebook page thanking the horse for her service.
"She loved her job and was always ready to go to work putting bad guys in jail or giving nuzzles to children ... she will be missed" the post said.
But the photo that initially sparked interest in the horse's death was taken by an unknown photographer and shared by pet service Animal Justice League on Facebook.
In the post the league said: "We admire the heart & strength of this officer because as you know, when you lose an animal, to be with them during their last breath is a heartbreaking & tough thing to do."

I know how hard it is to lose a pet dog, there would be a deep attachment between the Policeman and his horse. So sad. I remember my grandfather telling me about the Light Horse, in WW1, not being allowed to bring their horses home. Some men took the horses to a quiet place, and shot them, so the " Gypos' " wouldn't get them, in his words. After going through the horrors of War, he said that was the hardest thing the men had to do. And the most heart breaking.
I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food
A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking
