BULA! the Fijian rugby ethos. My Fijian rugby story consists of the afternoon touch football game each day at the Naviti hotel, between Aussies and Kiwis. As you do . There were no rules about numbers on the field, more the merrier. Late in the afternoon, Fijian workers and some from the adjoining village joined in, and it was Fiji against the rest. One afternoon, a tall lanky Fijian worker , with a rake over his shoulder, and wearing gum boots, was encouraged by his mates to have a run. And run he did. We couldn't catch him, at all. And he didn't take his gum boots off. Turns out he was the local village hero, a member of that years Fijian 7's team. I retired to the room balcony, with a cold beer, and watched.
