Shropshire was gifted to the RAN to replace Canberra, lost in iron bottom sound. Those in the British government were only too pleased to get rid of Shropshire, as she had a serious engineering defect , not revealed to the RAN . Red faces all round in the RN when the senior engineer in the new Australian crew discovered the defect, and rectified it, something the RN could not do since the Shropshire was launched.
