I知 pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking

Just found this while going through a few things so thought I'd throw it on for a pic.

Bob, I'd like to know your thoughts on the modern game.
I was brought up with Rugby at school and played a few games with the 'Sea Snakes'. I remember when the kerfuffle started with the 'Redcliffe Sevens' comp and the two breweries. My brother played with Teachers for a few years and a pommie born, brother-in-law played 1st Grade in Rocky. I used to love going to Ballymore to watch the big games, especially Queensland v British Lions.
Presently, regarding the modern 'Interpretations' of the game, the three of us have generally lost interest in international rugby.

Well, you've got me thinking. I recently saw a game, a final, played in NZ between North Auckland and the Marco's. [ think that was it.] A free flowing game , high scoring , physically tough. Some great tries scored, general handling and ruck & maul play good. The scrums a good contest for the ball, skillful lineout play, great to watch. Compare that with the similar level of the game in Aus. and you get box kicks, dropped ball, scrum resets ad infinitum, Stop start play, kicks in general play, ruck infringements ad nauseum, did I mention kicking? We seem to have lost most of the basic skills in the game, hookers who can't throw the ball in straight to save themselves, halfbacks who are too slow passing from set plays, No .10's who can't/ won't tackle, the list goes on. Some blame the referee's interpretation of the rules, and in some cases that may be correct. But we see the top NZ sides , when their game plan is not working, change their game plan on the run. Our sides ,with the exception of perhaps the Brumbies, don't seem to be able to do that successfully.

Years ago, when I played, the Kiwi's called us back yarders. In other words, good players but really had little idea of the finer nuances of the game. Good description really. Where oh where are the John Eales's, Nick Farr Jones's , Michael Lynagh's and yes, the Campese's .I don't remember seeing a decent back line movement this year. Having said that, a new coach, some exciting new players, a new year next year.....but that's what we said last year, and before that.....

New Zealand have the foundations of their game spot on. They develop players to be good people, as well as good players. Australia has to accept what they have, a la Kurtley Beale. It used to be said in a test match even though NZ could find many more good players than Aus. all we had to do was find 18 good players to match them. Not any more. Their best 18 are heads and shoulders over ours. How was this allowed to happen? Grass roots rugby in Australia is dying. Go to any club out west[ if you can find them] and the backbone of the club are usually from across the ditch. Well that's enough grumbling. I'll keep watching, hoping for a miracle. Here is an open letter to World Rugby , which has some very good points.
