The NSW CHO has declared there has been a new strain of delta virus detected in NSW. It is not known at this stage if this strain is more virulent than the other. Not a good time to be opening borders, it seems. The Doherty Institute says " hopefully" the high vaccination rates will protect the population. " Hopefully?", seems highly risky to me.

Vietnam and their struggle with DELTA. Despite a low vaccination rate overall, [ 15 % ], authorities decided to open up the south of the country after daily cases receded. The lockdown in Ho Chi Minh city was strict, no one was allowed to leave their residence for 3 months, and food had to be arranged and delivered by soldiers. In May last year Vietnam had seemed to be beating the virus, with 300 deaths reported. Now, the WHO reports the death toll is 20,000 out of 840,000 cases. The Vietnamese Government was late in ordering COVID vaccine doses, possibly hoping a glut in the market would bring down prices.

Six out of seven Covid cases in Africa are going undetected. Most tests are being done on people with symptoms, but much of the transmission is being driven by asymptomatic people , meaning many fly under the radar. The WHO is supporting countries that interrupt disease transmission, by funding teams in communities who find possible contacts of people who test positive and offer antigen rapid diagnostic tests. They will be using a strategy pioneered to successfully eradicate smallpox , and control Ebola, called the " Ring Strategy", targeting anyone living within a 100 metre circle around a new confirmed case.
