Surprising what you find in Op Shops....

I have a tendency to frequent Op Shops, mainly looking for books but you never know what'll turn up.

Most do not seem to have tools, are they not donated ? Do the guys out the back get first dibs ? When someone passes do the family keep the tools and just send the stuff they don't want to the Op Shop ?

Found one in Country VIC today that had a few interesting items. I'm away on business so I couldn't load the car up too much

A 'Precise mileage tester' from the Zenith Carburettor Division, Bendix Aviation Corp. Detroit.
There is a glass bowl in the centre, three pipe connections and a changeover lever. Looks like you fill the bowl then run and monitor the fuel level dropping.

We still get shedloads of old tools, sometimes even with the shed!!
I volunteer at an Endeavour recycling centre they are quite strict on what the guys out the back can buy.....
you'd think they'd throw the vols a bone,, but no.

I enjoy XXXX cans (when looking after a private yacht charter in the Whitsundays).

What happens to them at the recycling centre?

I've found it odd that 99% of Op Shops I visit (and I visit a few) do not have tools.

I have asked at the op shops around here why no tools. The workers say they never see any. The emphasis is on good clothes. The couple of shops that did have tools have closed yonks ago. Seems only St. Vincent's and Lifeline are left.
I know Public Trustee send estate goods to auction. The auctioneers and op shops do not want electrical goods as they have to pay a licensed electrician to test and tag them before they can be offered for sale. The op shops have got very fussy and seem not to want stuff they can give to people in need but only stuff they can sell at profit. The Sallys refused a house of good furniture when my m-i-l went into care. "Old fashioned. Nobody wants that stuff." Well a woman and children fleeing domestic violence might like some furniture to start again with.

There is a local auction near here monthly (Ballimore) that I go to occasionally. Plenty of tools (last venture ten days ago I got two large Sidchrome OE Whitworth spanners for $2 the pair), and quite a bit of furniture - but furniture prices are very low, and a lot fails to get a bid, so the comment about it not being wanted may well be right.

We dont sell anything electric anymore,, nothing. I dont really understand how they can justify not selling TV's but yet are quite happy to keep selling knives and chainsaws,, ask yourself when was the last time you hurt yourself with a TV or stereo,, ?? All that stuff now gets shredded, loaded onto a boat and goes to Japan where they suck the gold out..

We have a local Tip Shop that I usually pull into after taking a load to the tip and on a few occasions I have come back with more than I took with me.
One mans junk is another mans treasure and you would be amazed what you can get for a few dollars at these places

Same at our local tip shop but no tools at virtually all Op shops.

Had a quick google and the vacuum tube (valve) tester dates back to the 1930's, the Precise Mileage tester appears on Model T & Model A forums so maybe for very early vehicles.
There is a hook to hang it on a partly open window (& two suckers to make sure it stays in place), glass bowl is 1/10th of a gallon.
See how many miles you travel on a bowl full, multiply by 10 and you have mpg.
