    Treadle Scroll Saw

Picked up a New Rogers treadle scrollsaw at the Trash & Treasure market this morning.

Part of the cast iron frame is broken.
Anyone local any good at cast iron welding or bronze welding ??

Otherwise any advice appreciated. A steel plate has been bolted in place so it's usable but I'd like to repair it......

    Great score.....

Use nickel rods to weld but you need to preheat and cool slowly

The usual sort of weld prep needed

    Hello Colin,

Is your scroll saw like this one? YouTube

All You Tube Clips Accessed 26th January 2020 ...
There are a number of clips on YouTube about welding or brazing cast iron. I have no experience in the process just had some time to do some research.

I found a YouTube by Mr TIG about welding cast iron... It requires a TIG welder surprisingly enough...
    YouTube

    Another approach YouTube

    Plus "Muggy" weld product YouTube

    Brazing: another Muggy Product YouTube

Muggy have lots of videos about their products... lots and lots...

    More brazing ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wN3-4rN0n4E

I have a Singer sewing machine made in the 1940s that has a plated repair in the cast iron side. Yes like your scroll saw my machine is usable - just does not look right with steel plates bolted through either side of the cracked casting.

    Kind regards
    Lionel

It appears you live in the frozen state. If you were up here you could take it to Accurate Welding Works and the problem would be solved in a trice.

    Hi Lionel,
I found the YouTube video of the scroll saw and yes it's the same one.
The picture was grabbed from the Internet, mine is still in hiding in the back of Wallit otherwise SWMBO will need an explanation....

Supplied by Millers Falls back in the days when they made stuff rather than badging Chinese equipment. 'Rogers' was one of the Directors.

Also looked up cast iron welding, stick welding with nickel rods as suggested by Incisor seems the way to go. I've never done it before, it's a thin section that needs welding plus a pack of rods is about the same price as I paid for the complete scroll saw !

Belt & blades on order from Ebay.

Plenty of places down here that can do it but when my total investment so far is $40 I'm keen to do it myself.

A mate TIG welded the casting.
I re-made part of the frame that was missing, the spindle for the main pulley and new main beams & link from treadle to main pulley.
I'm not usually a fan of re-painting old tool but this was in quite a state when I found it, originally it was pinstriped but not something I've done before so I've left that for now.

About 100years old and ready for use again......

    Hi John,
Yes but I'd fitted a coping saw blade (knocked the pins out either end first), I really need to get some proper scroll saw blades.
Cuts OK but not sure I'd want to spend hours using it although once you get into the rhythm it doesn't take much effort.
