    Aldi plasma cutter

Aldi have their plasma cutters out again. $299. Wish I could justify it. But I can’t.

I saw them this morning and thought, Aldi? No thanks.

So does mine….. 7 years on. Pity, because like most Aldi stuff they are pretty good for the price. Not for a factory perhaps, but fine for the DIYer

ALDI is German and they don't like to make or in this case I suspect even make junk, they always strive for quality, from my experience with German friends and customers, and are generally good companies, like Mercedes, Siemens, Bosch, etc.

I shop there about once a month for a certain type of imported biscuit and cat sand, their versions have always been good quality. I don't have much hardware from them, IIRC, a set of o-rings in metric and imperial which have been very handy and a leaf blower/shredder which I was very impressed with as it could shred Golden Cane palm fronds, except the wrap around bit of course.

Edit: I also have their water pump which I was going to use in a grey water system but it wouldn't fit in the layout I finally chose.

Aldi is a German retailer of Chinese tat.
I know someone who bought an Aldi washing machine, total rubbish but no problems getting a refund.
On Saturday I bought some cheap LED lights there and was advised to keep the receipt.

China is the factory of the world, in my experience their problem is quality control.

China is the factory of the world, in my experience their problem is quality control. Probably good enough for DIY as Tins says, but not for something mission critical, like a space, nuclear or jet propulsion programme, all of which they have.

Cost benefit analysis also comes into play, like a BBQ brush made in America costs $60 vs China $20.

Generally, you get what you pay for, I knew a guy that was in the appliance repair business about 25 years ago and he said the rule of thumb for washing machines was $100 for each year of life expectancy.

Every big item I have bought from Aldi has been fine. The pressure washer is brilliant. Washing machine too. Smaller stuff like screwdrivers are just ok to chuck in the tool box. I have never had to return anything, which is more than I can say for “name brand “ stuff I have got from the big green shed.
As for China, I am typing this on a 13 year old iMac which was made there. My Milwaukee tools, of which I have many, are the same. It’s all about the big name mobs insisting on QC. And Aldi is a big mob. I would be happy getting some cordless tools from them to use around the house rather than wear out the Red stuff.
But I don’t like their bread.

The Japanese make a lot of things in China - but they make them to Japanese standards. I suspect that my bespoke Japanese shirts are made there, but regardless of where they're made the quality is unobtainable in Australia.
