    Question caravan sway

I have just bought a 2008 Range Rover and tow a 21'6'" Paramount caravan weight 2500kg. I am new to the world of towing with a range rover, having previously using a Pajero with a WDH. As per the Range Rover manual and info on this site I do not use a WDH with my new set up. My problem is that I keep getting a sway up at around 100kph and I have no idea how to stop it, or what is causing it. I have tried moving annex and heavy items over the wheel and reduced the amount of water in front tanks. Still have issues. I feel the problem may be that the tow hitch on the range rover is too low by a couple of inches to allow the caravan to tow level. Does anyone have any advice? will using the Hayman Reece tow hitch (without the bars) help?

It sounds that you have moved too much weight to the rear of the van - you say you have emptied the front water tank etc - sway is usually too much weight to the rear of the van. Too much weight at the front will not cause sway but may cause other issues.

The simple rule of about 10% of the weight of the van on the tow ball is relevant = personally I would go about 8% and not over 10%.

Thanks. I'll move the stuff towards the front and see if it helps. I'll change the water to the front tanks and leave the rear one almost empty. Do you use the range rover standard tow hitch or do you use something a little higher? I have heard that using the tow head for the Hayman Reece helps but having just bought this car and knowing the Range Rover exclusions for WDH I don't want to use it until I get the right advice from someone who tows on a RR

I have a RRS rather than a RR so dynamics are a little different. I have a Mitch Hitch rather than the standard offering so is higher - likewise I mainly tow about 1 tonne and only tow higher weights when moving cars.

You can get adjustable receiver hitches that could raise the height but I am not sure how they go in the standard tow arrangement.

You might want to have a read of this thread - relates to a D4 but I believe the comments also apply to your RR. One of the later posts indicates that even Hayman Reece do not consider a WDH should be used on our vehicles.

I see from your post related to tow bars that you actually have Range Rover Sport and not a Range Rover - very different cars.

In that case the link above about towing with a D4 is basically relevant except you will not have the towing stability control system that the D4 has.

    Cheers

Have you towed the van with another tug? Did it sway on that tug if the answer is yes?

Why not turn the standard tow hitch ball mount upside down? that should give you 2 to four inches. I did that when towing my camper trailer.

I thought all hayman reece tow hitchs are rated to max 2250kg? They have one which is adjustable for height I use for my Mitch Hitch to get my boat under my garage roof. Mine was from Auto barn I think? I could run it up the other way if I wanted height I assume.

I would move more weight to the front as others have suggested and consider checking the suspension. My boat is about the same weight and tracks perfectly behind my Disco3 at speed.

Good luck, not fun getting wavey tracks at 100km

Thanks forthe question. Yes I towed the van on a 2003 Pajero with a hayman reece set up and it did not sway. That set up was quite a bit higher than the RRS.

Thanks. I've looked at the tow ball. It is at the highest point to turn it upside down would drop the ball quite a bit. back to drawing board.
The Hayman Reece I am referring to is the 800lb weightr distribution hitch. This is adjustable and would give me a few inches. I have seen other D4 and RRS sers doing this and it seems to work.
