G'Day Folks,
I'm in the process of fitting the brakes to my trailer. Collected the axle and kit during the week. Have bolted the axle on, fitted the backing plates (finger tight) and installed the hub/drums. My plan is to adjust the brakes until they lock, to get the backing plate exactly centred on the drum, then tighten the nuts that secure the backing plate to the axle flange. Then adjust the shoes until they just make contact.
My problem is that it looks to me like there is too much clearance between the backing plate and the drum. With the nuts on the backing plate loosened off so I can move it laterally, I find that I can move it out about 2mm from the axle flange before the edges of the shoes contact the inside of the drum. I could reduce this by putting some washers between the backing plate and the axle flange. Is this an acceptable solution? Or is this amount of clearance acceptable?
