    Do I need Trailer brakes?

Hello all, I hopefully pick up our first camper trailer this week but I wanted to know should I get trailer brakes or not worry about it. The vehicle is a D3 tdv6 and the camper trailer is a Outback 'birdsville' soft top camper trailer, the weight indicated is 500kg's. As I said its our first camper so my knowledge level is next to nothing at the moment so any advice is appreciated, secondly what brake controllers Is everyone using and have they been happy with them.

    Cheers
    Julian

750kg GVM is when you need trailer brakes.
Weigh the trailer when it is fully loaded with water, food, camping gear, etc.

    DoctorJ,

Legally you are ok you don't need brakes until you get to > 750kg.

I doubt anyone would advise you to get brakes put onto the camper trailer if it has not already got them.

For >750 kg and <2000kg you can use override brakes, these do not need a controller as the brakes on your trailer are activated by the trailer pushing onto the tow ball. These brakes are usually hydraulic although mechanical cable operated are also available.

Electric brakes, electric over hydraulic require brake controllers. Electric brakes are likely to set you back $300+ per wheel plus controller that you mayget for $200+.

Enjoy your camper, you will feel it but not worth the effort to put brakes on it if you can keep it below 750kg.

You probably won't have a problem and at 500kgs not a lot of weight, BUT, get it weighed loaded, put everything you think you'll need in it, water, gas bottles, clothes, bedding, food, cutlery, crockery, pots and pans, you'll be amazed how much weight is added when you put all this in the camper, just water and full gas bottles will be 80 to 100kgs, which brings you up to 600kg, only 150kg to go

Remember 500kg is your tare weight not GVM.

Look at the link Mick has put up, this is a national law too, not just Victorian

if you have the option to fit brakes than i would do it.

i tried to keep my camper trailer below 750kg...i'm at 1100kg without water. a 72L water tank is about to be droppped in which will add another 100kg

i'm now trying to work out which way to go with brakes.....i have land rover stubs and axles fitted grrrrr

You shouldn't have a problem with the Disco1 and Defender PCD and electric backing plate and hubs, I was certain they are an off the shelf AL-KO product, you just have to find someone to put the 16mm studs into them.
    Cheers Baz.

OK so you don't have a trailer axle (ie) 45mm square?
    Cheers Baz.
