    Springs

I am currently halfway through a trailer build and now looking at what springs to fit. Instead of the normal trailer springs I am wondering if I would be better off with automotive springs with shocks for a better softer ride ie Falcon SW or hilux etc. Weight of my trailer should be around 500 - 600KG. Has anyone got any thoughts?

whats the trailer for, and whats towing it, and what size wheels ?
    I'm assuming a camper trailer.
I'll use Holden SB Combo rear single leaf, for my next trailer. excellent springs for a offroad camper.

Yes is a tear drop style camper to go behind my D1 and Wrangler. Will have 31" on it. What's an SB combo is that one of those funny looking van things? Would like to stick to something that would be common to find off the beaten track if need spares.

yes, one of those funny looking things, Barina front , van shoehorned on the back,

you will never break one of those springs, not unusual for those vans to have a one tonne pallet in the back - will handel your camper no probs.

they are a single leaf thick spring , wont rust, vibrate or fall to bits like typical leaf spring packs, similar to the old ford transit single leaf front springs.

have a look a a wreckers, worth trying to find a pair.

could not find any SB combo springs on google so took some pics for you,
the springs are about twice as long as regular trailer springs. You could possibly even use the entire Combo back axle with hubs & brakes then get some wheel/hub adaptors made to suit your Disco wheels, turn the axle upsideown for more clearance ??

    Randy,
there are many options. in my experience factory automotive leaves will always always be better than the junk that is fobbed off as trailer springs.

What is your overall sprung weight gonna be?
    What axle/hub/tyre are you running?

I have used a few different types of springs, but never a tapered parabolic single leaf as suggested by going bush. I would definitely look at it further as it would make a lightweight strong rust resistant package.

One other clue/trick seen in the photos posted by going bush.
Take special care when building the suspension with regards to your shackle location and angle. The shackles give you a huge proportion of the initial ride compliance.

That looks the goods the axle would be the way to go as well however I imagine it would be too narrow for me my trailer is 1500 wide. I did toy with using the rear end of a Subaru brumby as is a bolt on independent job but again was too narrow for me. Will probably just use standard 1500 kg 5 ft axel with std trailer hubs.

There is a Combo van sitting at work, and crawling under it the other day thought the springs looked good for a lightish camper.

Older guy that comes into work built his camper 20 years ago with Falcon rear leaves and hasn't had a spring failure in a lot of outback km's
