why couldn't a person have a registed chassis with various bolt on modules for different trailer uses. To be legal you probably would have to register it at the weight of the heaviest bolt on module, in your case the camper module. Then you would drop the camper off the chassis andput on atray top forthe tip, etc.

or have a box trailer with a slide on camper, as in those slide on campers that do fit a ute back, but a custom made one to suit your trailer.

Perhaps bolted to the trailer floor with plugs to go into those bolt holes when you want the camper body removed to use it as a box trailer.

If I built a trailer I would be thinking about a modular idea.

Indeed. The main issue with a slide on camper though is the weight and difficulty of putting it on and off the trailer.

easy,

flat deck hinge framed trailer with sides to take the camper on top of or in side of.
drop slots in the deck to take the bike channel
tailgate to let it do the rubbish runs.


Loading the camper module is just a case of making a pair of channels onto the bottom of the camper module that can slide up over the top of the trailer sides (or a pair of skids that you can slide up onto the deck) and a winching point on the module,

So would finding a trailer to work with (modify), or building a new trailer (given I'd have to get someone else to do it for me) be a better option?

Working out the ideal physical size of the trailer and proper location of the axle (to get good weight distribution and stable towing) would be challenging.

For a "basic" camping set up, I was thinking a slideout kitchen and storage drawer/s underneath, with a platform mounting a roof top tent above.

Come have a look at the green trailer and the concept can be eyeballed off of that.

Do you mean an ex-army trailer circa 1960's? I used to have one - deck is way too high.

I would have thought single axle was the way to go or maneuverability would be compromised (plus costs more in tyres etc). Not anticipating it weighing as much as a caravan....

I like tandems without load sharing for light weight off road work, minimises ramp over and departure angles, adds flotation, gives redundancy, allows for extra payload if its needed.
