vlad.....there are cast a thousands of trailer suppliers ranging from cheap imports to locally made

if you budget can extend i would go heavy duty gal aussie made

re: tent, you are looking a roof top tent not camper trailer tent (big defference). if it is camper trailer tent you need to work out which tent you are going to buy before selection the trailer size....if its a roof top tent than you could easily mount this over an open trailer

am i right a bike would need a 7' trailer?

i used a roof top tent for my camper trailer (cannot be used as a normal trailer) as i can take it off and put it on the defender for trips that i cannot take a trailer

here is a starting point for trailer, has sizes and a nice pick http://www.lintontrailers.com.au/box_trailers.html

    Thanks.

Size of trailer for a bike would depend on size of bike. I've seen some nice set ups with a cut out in the tailgate fro teh rear wheel to poke through to allow trailer length to be lower.. but yeah ideally long enough for a decent bike - not sure exactly but 7' would cover it.

Yes I like the RTT idea as indeed it could be fitted to the vehicle in lieu of the trailer.

    Decisions decisions.

Fortunately its an academic exercise at the moment but I like to be well researched on such things.

Hi Vlad, mine has land rover wheels to. 7x4.5 box trailer with a full chassis so it doesnt need sides or floor for strength, used for work with 200ltr spray tank and 2/3m sand-slide that off and my soft floor camper slides on attached with 4 bolts, next plan is to extend the drawbar[replace] an extra metre so the hobie 16 can sit on top of the tent, its also braked.

    Re: Multi-purpose trailer ?

    So, research should include:

Asking people in places like here what features you should get for the roles you want.

Look at photos/other trailers and write down the features you like. Visit the local servo with hire trailers. Measure them up and make more notes.

If you have someone make it for you, get a written quote, with all the features listed. They will also match the drawbar level with your vehicle

A few things I had incorporated into a trailer I had made (purpose: not too 4wd camping, carting wood, dirt, furniture, bike transportation, stuff.

I ended up with a 7x4 with high sides.
Removable cage, cage door opens front and back (could use it with no doors on.
Removable drop down front and rear
    Led lights
Longer drawbar (originally for pushbikes to be carried across the front - not so great for 'off road' use. Also it sits further back from vehicle and doesn't fully enjoy the slipstream
    Swing down jockey wheel
Canvas tarp for both cage when fitted, and another for when it is removed. Canopy bows fit either
    Tie down rails all round
Mechanical disc brakes (easy to fix on the run
Wiring travels to lights via small square steel section welded to bottom of trailer
    Checker plate floor

    Wish list: internal tie downs
Back door of cage *almost* fits in place of rear tailgate and could be used as a ramp with a bit of planning

I'm halfway thru building my multi purpose trailer and started with a 2nd hand chassis that i have beefed up and extended the sides, mine is 6x4 but i think 7x4 would be ideal. If i am happy with everything else on mine i will build another from scratch as a 7x4 and sell the other to finance it.
I only need to add a channel to use for my bike or i could use my workshop stand for the front wheel that will bolt in.

That's exactly what I had in mind for carrying a bike. They work well.
Would still need to tie the back of the bike down though.

vald, tailgait could probably double as a ramp to load the bikes.

And tie down the front, two on the front and one around the rear wheel attached to each side.
