    Roof Rack Bags

Hi, I would like some info on the best make of bag for offroading. I would prefer the "mattress" shape to the bulkier higher type, but obviously dustproof and waterproof are the main factors.Cheers

I had one a loooong time ago and found that unless the bag was very full it leaked, as the sides would have a bend in them around the zip which loosened the seal flap.
I would look for one where either the zip was at the bottom, and/or there was an extra large flap with velcro which ensured no water got in.

Regardless, I think they would have to be full to be waterproof as any bend in the sides are driven in and water pools from the movement of teh car. I would still put my stuff in waterproof bags.
    Regards Philip A

I have a Rhino bag that I got earlier this year which I found had a very good system of zip with velcro to help seal no matter how full it was. We took it on a trip that rained heavily on the way there plus the first day off road with no leaking at all

I also have a Rhino half rack bag. Very robust construction and excellent double velcro plus zip sealing system for dust and water. Very effective. Only down side is that it makes it less convenient for getting stuff in and out. Good for a long trip where you load once and unload once. More of a pain if you need to access regularly.

I did quite a bit of looking before I bought a MSA bag. They were the only ones claiming 100% water and dust proof. I took it up Cape York and was thoroughly impressed. Not a spec of dust inside. We encountered some reasonable heavy rain and no water ingress either. A bit pricy but you deffinately get what you pay for.

You get the gear bag then another cover goes over the top and scures to the base which protects and assists with the dust/water proofing. Then another set of straps hold it all down. Both bag and cover are of the same material. Have a look at it here MSA 4x4 | Tourer & Basket Packs
