there is probably a few reasons.........

i am running muddies on the defender at th emoment and am about to replace the two fronts with brand new ones......guess where the half worn muddies are going.....onto the trailer. sounds like a resonable solution for your old tyres to me

I agree, if I was buying tyres, I would run A/T's but if you already have muddies on it why change unless they are not worthy of such a trip. Weeds brings forth a very valid point, 1900kg is a fair weight to be running at 100kmh and old tyres dont like running for hours on end.

I do the same thing with the tyres from the disco, they go back onto the trailer

Well that's understandable but I know of a few people who don't run muddies while touring but seem to think their camper trailer needs them, which I think is a waste of money tbh.

Yorkie. I'd go for as close to standard size tyre as you can in the A/T pattern. I have Toyo Open Country A/T on my D2a 255 65 16 and can highly recommend them. It is a Classic though with the bigger rims. I get 12l/100km combined while towing our 23ft Daydream.

There are a lot of comments in regards to MTs. Our Trak Shak trailer has MTs on it - because they are the old ones from the Defender. The best 3 (out of 6) get put onto the trailer each time I buy a set.

In regards to MTs on the vehicle - trust me when I say that towing off-road teaches you a few things. First is that MTs are priceless when you need them - and funnily enough 1.5 ton of dead weight on the back does make a big difference.

I still get decent km's out of the MTs on road, however I don't push past 100km/h when towing and I'm still running 235/85R16s rather than upsizing. Makes a big difference.
